Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough for Season-Long Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are still insufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season. He stated, "Is it enough to win races from now until the season ends? I don't believe so yet, but we've made a significant move in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance further to reliably compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outpace McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pit, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's unique characteristics suited our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a very distinct and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on the track. We used a rear wing designed specifically for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the rest of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have secured one here in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized expectations, referencing previous discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be different yet again. Therefore, we need to recalibrate. We already made adjustments moving from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced by the significant shift between these two weekends, each race can vary greatly."
“We experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such tough races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen.”
"However, it’s crucial to manage not just the team's expectations, but also those from outsiders, ensuring they don't become unrealistically high from one race to the next."
“Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we are definitely moving in the right direction.”
