Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's upgrade is insufficient for consistent race victories until the season concludes.
"Do I believe it’s enough to secure wins throughout the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by making the most of a one-stop strategy, defeating McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update set for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four toughest races of the season, as Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit as well."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make our car the dominant one for the remainder of the season on other circuits."
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm very pleased to have one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers’ standings.
Likewise, in the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship pursuit after his victory in Monaco.
"Our performance was impressive this weekend, but Baku could present a whole new set of challenges, and Singapore will be unique as well. We need to recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition from one event to the next can be quite significant."
"We had a series of three or four extremely tough races this season as we tried to figure out what was happening with our car. I'm hopeful we won't face another stretch of challenging races like that, and I don't anticipate it will happen again."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes, we have. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've taken a positive step forward."
