Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrade Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Victory Streak
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari's recent improvements are 'insufficient' for 'winning races for the remainder of the season.' He stated, "Is it enough to secure victories in the races ahead? I don't believe so at this point, but we've definitely made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season, utilizing a one-stop pit strategy to outperform McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance with the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focused on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track suited our car perfectly at that moment. Monza, likewise, is a unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, pointing to similar discussions about a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be different too. We need to adjust our approach accordingly. We successfully made adjustments between Monaco and Montreal, but as demonstrated by the transition from Monaco to Montreal, the conditions and circumstances can shift significantly from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such challenging races again, and I believe that won't happen."
However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic.
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? I don't believe it is just yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
