Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Latest Upgrade Not Enough to Sustain Winning Streak
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvements may fall short of securing victories for the remainder of the season.
"Is it sufficient to secure race wins from now until the season concludes? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has indicated that Ferrari must improve their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to triumph over McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance at Monza with the fastest car.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
“We have to be careful,” he stated. “Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's layout suited our car perfectly at that point. Monza is another track with unique characteristics.”
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which played a key role in our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has closed the gap with McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season at other circuits."
"We have a significant amount of work ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has had a challenging time since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
Likewise, in the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered the high hopes, referencing previous discussions about a title challenge after his victory in Monaco.
“We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. Therefore, we need to approach each race with a fresh mindset. We already adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced, the transition between these two races was significant.”
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of tough races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket after just one race, as that's not a realistic perspective."
“Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races from now until the season concludes? Not quite, but we have definitely moved in the right direction.”
