Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans After Monza Win: More Upgrades Needed to Challenge McLaren for 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari's recent enhancement is ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season’. He stated, "Is it sufficient to clinch race wins until the season concludes? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has issued a caution that Ferrari must enhance their performance if they want to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season, utilizing a one-stop strategy to outmaneuver McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car instability.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following the Monaco race, we've experienced the toughest four races of the season. Monaco suited our car's characteristics uniquely well at that point. Similarly, Monza is a very distinct and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren, but I don't think it will make us the leading car for the rest of the season at other tracks."
“There is still much to be done, but I'm very pleased to have achieved this here in Italy.”
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referring to past discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be unique as well. Therefore, we need to approach each event with a fresh mindset. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, and as evident, the transition between these two races involved significant changes."
"We then experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of challenging races like that, and I believe it won't happen again."
"However, it is crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations do not skyrocket from one race to the next, as this is not realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
