Charles Leclerc Cautions Against Over-Optimism Despite Ferrari’s Monza Triumph: More Upgrades Needed to Challenge McLaren
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's upgrade isn't sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. "Will it allow us to win races from now until the season's end? I doubt it, but we've made significant progress in the right direction," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must continue to improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season, utilizing a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, which underscored McLaren's dominance as the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update kit for the Italian Grand Prix, mainly focused on addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza is another track with very unique characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has reduced the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car on other tracks for the remainder of the season."
"I believe there's still much to be done, but I'm very pleased to have achieved one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, pointing to comparable discussions about a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend we performed exceptionally well, but the situation in Baku could be quite different, and the same goes for Singapore. It's important for us to readjust our approach. We managed to do that between Monaco and Montreal, but the transition from Monaco to Montreal demonstrated just how significantly things can change from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced a few of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face several challenging races in a row again, and I don't anticipate that happening."
"However, it's crucial to keep in mind that both the team and external expectations should remain grounded, as it's unrealistic to let them skyrocket from one race to the next."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. But is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, though we are definitely moving in the right direction."
