Television host and writer Carol Vorderman has urged the prime minister to issue an apology for reducing winter fuel allowances for the elderly.

Today, parliament passed a contentious policy, even though several Labour MPs chose not to participate in the voting process. Government officials stated that "hard choices" were necessary to address the issues in public financial management.

However, it faced significant backlash from opposition members of parliament and activists, who cautioned that the decision could cause countless elderly people to stress about their financial stability.

During an interview on Sky News' Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge, Vorderman expressed her surprise at Labour's choice to implement the reduction, describing it as "astonishing."

When Sophy inquired about what actions Sir Keir Starmer should take, she responded, "I truly believe he ought to apologize."

The renowned presenter, previously known for her role on the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown, has increasingly expressed her political opinions. Leading up to the general election in July, she supported a strategic voting website aimed at thwarting the Conservative Party.

She stated, "I closely monitored the election lead-up, and we entered nearly two million postcodes into the system [on the website]… we're aware that it had an impact.

Millions of individuals temporarily gave their support to the Labour Party, hoping that the severe disparities that have increased over the past 14 years would be somewhat reduced.

"Then, this [reducing the winter fuel subsidy] is the initial step."

Vorderman expressed her comprehension of why government officials might choose to withdraw the payment, which can amount to as much as £300, from affluent retirees who receive these funds irrespective of their earnings.

"In two years, that'll be me," she continued. "So, I won't require the winter fuel allowance payment."

"However, reducing the number from 12 million to under two million retirees receiving benefits is excessively low."

"I'm surprised by it, because there are numerous other methods they could use to generate that income."

When Sophy questioned her about whether she thought the government had deceived the public before coming into power, she responded, "I do, I really do. And it's shocking, especially considering that many pensioners will suffer as a result… Can you believe that the first action taken by this new Labour government was that?"

"I truly don't think this is what they were elected to accomplish; it's rather surprising, actually."

When Sophie Ridge questioned Treasury Chief Secretary Darren Jones about this, he responded, "We were elected with the commitment to manage the public finances effectively. What we weren't aware of, and what the public also didn't realize, was that the Conservatives had concealed that there were impending bills of £22 billion this year, for which they had allocated no funds."

"This involves the management of our healthcare system, general practitioner services, educational institutions, and law enforcement agencies. We are entrusted with the economy and the public's finances, making it our duty to secure the necessary funds to cover these expenses and ensure our public services operate efficiently."

"We're restructuring the budget to ensure that by the Labour Budget on October 30, we can begin to invest in strengthening our base, and then proceed to fulfill our promises to reconstruct Britain as outlined in our manifesto."
