Carlos Sainz’s Move to Williams Seen as a ‘Vote of No Confidence’ in Audi’s F1 Project
Carlos Sainz's choice to decline Audi's offer has been described as "a show of distrust."
"In my opinion, it signifies a lack of confidence in Sauber/Audi, especially considering the familial ties between Sainz and his father, Carlos Sainz Sr…"
Carlos Sainz has opted to bypass an opportunity with Audi and instead signed on with Williams for the 2025 Formula 1 season, a move that has been described as signaling a lack of faith in the German team's plans.
Carlos Sainz had the option of joining Williams, Audi, or Alpine for the upcoming year, but he ultimately chose to sign with the Grove-based team.
Carlos Sainz faced a major decision considering the factory team status and substantial resources of Audi and Alpine compared to Williams.
Nevertheless, with James Vowles at the helm, Williams seems to be progressing positively.
Alpine is experiencing turmoil due to their annual changes in management, compounded by the probable transition to operating as a customer team.
Audi has recently undergone significant management changes, whereas Sauber's performance on the track in 2024 has been extremely poor.
During an episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Craig Slater commented that it reflects the "chaos" within Audi.
"The decision appears to reflect a lack of confidence in Sauber/Audi, especially considering the Sainz family's ties, with Carlos Sainz Sr. having won the Dakar Rally with Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group," he stated.
"The fact that he chose not to pursue what appeared to be the most logical option indicates that something is amiss."
"I had a conversation with an individual who has a clear view of the current happenings within that team."
"He’s stating the obvious, but he characterized the situation as chaotic and noted that the team is currently struggling with basic tasks, like properly fitting a wheel on a car. This disarray at the leadership level mirrors the broader issues the team is facing right now."
According to Slater, the chaos described in the reports likely discouraged Sainz, especially considering the difficulties faced by Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu this year.
"They mentioned to me that they had underestimated Audi. This isn't the first instance we've heard of a manufacturer facing challenges in getting things right in Formula One within the given timeframe," he explained.
“I believe all of this has discouraged Sainz. He is concerned that if he joins, he might find himself in a similar predicament to Bottas and Zhou, with little improvement next year, and it's uncertain what the future holds beyond that.”
"In my opinion, he has made the most sensible choice given his circumstances. It's unfortunate that someone as logical, practical, and pragmatic as Sainz finds himself in this situation; I find it hard to comprehend."
"Each decision he made regarding his drivers seemed logical at the moment, though none of them yielded the expected results. I believe he will trust James Vowles after a face-to-face conversation."
"He is a competent individual who understands his actions. His decisions with Williams are logical, despite requiring some compromises, which might not be apparent with other teams."
