Brundle Critiques Antonelli’s ‘Lucky’ Break, Acknowledges ‘Impressive’ Grit; Wolff’s Steadfast Support Key to Teen’s F1 Ambitions
Martin Brundle describes Kimi Antonelli as "fortunate" but highlights an "admirable" quality. The influence of Toto Wolff on Kimi Antonelli's career progression is evaluated.
Martin Brundle has shared his opinion on Kimi Antonelli’s debut F1 session with Mercedes.
Teen driver Antonelli had an unfortunate start to FP1 on Friday, crashing just minutes into the session. Antonelli is poised to take over from Lewis Hamilton next season as Mercedes' new promising talent.
Toto Wolff responded to Antonelli’s accident by affirming that his confidence in the 18-year-old talent is unwavering.
Sky Sports' Brundle commented that Toto is doing the only thing within his power to back his driver.
“They won't be able to secure Max Verstappen. It appears they intend to go with Antonelli, who is evidently an emerging star.”
"The only thing they are able to do is lessen the impact."
For many years, Sir Jackie Stewart has been known to say, "Puppy dogs will wet the carpet!"
"That's essentially the message Toto is conveying, but he's expressing it more articulately."
Antonelli is fortunate to have a supportive team and boss who have a lot of faith in him.
"With determination, he immediately returned to the track and began posting remarkable F2 lap times."
Following a standard visit to the medical center on Friday due to his crash in the first practice session, Antonelli came back to the circuit for the Formula 2 qualifying round.
He secured the sixth position in the F2 qualifying session at Monza this weekend.
'F1 Spotlight' Alert for Antonelli
Mercedes is likely to announce Antonelli as the replacement for Hamilton, who is moving to Ferrari.
His debut in Formula 1 will position him as the most anticipated newcomer since Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
"He certainly seems to be, but you can never be sure until they face the intense scrutiny of Formula 1, where they are evaluated in all aspects, every single day," Brundle remarked.
"It's similar to a flower's growth. Occasionally, the attention causes the flower to flourish, while other times it makes it wither. You can't predict the outcome until it's actually happening."
“There have been drivers who excelled in karting and junior racing, but when they reached Formula 1, they failed to perform.
"He's fortunate because he's joining a leading, race-winning, and potentially championship-winning team."
"In other words, you avoid spending years stuck at the rear of the pack, dealing with accidents and constant stress."
