At nearly 18 years old, Monger found himself in a battle to survive.
The man remained stuck in his car for over an hour before a helicopter transported him to the hospital.
Monger was unconscious in a coma, and upon regaining consciousness, discovered that parts of both his legs had been amputated.
Amazingly, he came back to racing that same year with a vehicle modified for his disability. Twelve months following his accident, Monger secured third place in a BRDC Formula 3 competition.
The FIA removed restrictions to allow drivers with disabilities to compete in specially adapted vehicles.
Monger received the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event.
