Bagnaia Dominates Record-Breaking Emilia Romagna Practice as Martin Crashes in Chaotic Session
Emilia Romagna MotoGP: Bagnaia sets record pace, Martin suffers crash during practice
Current champion leads crash-heavy second session at Misano
Francesco Bagnaia from Ducati led the second practice session for the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, while championship frontrunner Jorge Martin experienced a crash during the incident-heavy practice.
After securing the top spot at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano two weeks prior by breaking the lap record, Bagnaia surpassed this achievement during the hour-long practice session for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The Ducati motorcyclist clocked a time of 1 minute and 30.286 seconds, finishing 0.198 seconds ahead of Pramac’s Martin. This occurred after the championship frontrunner experienced a crash at Turn 8 just before the session concluded.
Among the seven riders who crashed during the afternoon session at Misano, he emerged uninjured and successfully clinched a spot in Q2 for qualifying.
Marc Marquez secured the third position in a chaotic session for the Gresini team, abandoning his primary bike to achieve a top lap time of 1m30.585s.
Enea Bastianini finished in fourth place even though he had a late crash, and Fabio Quartararo earned a second consecutive Q2 position, placing fifth for Yamaha.
In the initial stages of the second practice session, Bagnaia led the field with a time of 1 minute 30.924 seconds after the first 15 minutes. He maintained the top position until Martin surpassed him with a lap time of 1 minute 30.844 seconds, a little over 30 minutes before the session concluded.
Martin improved his time to 1 minute and 30.5 seconds, but this lap was invalidated as it was set during a yellow flag period caused by Tech3 GASGAS rider Augusto Fernandez's crash at Turn 5, which occurred with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Shortly after, Bagnaia recorded a time of 1 minute and 30.286 seconds, which remained unchallenged for the rest of the session, despite a series of crashes that led to more yellow flag interruptions.
Martin's mishap at Turn 8 occurred when he lost control of the front of his Pramac Ducati while braking at that turn.
Moments afterward, Fabio Di Giannantonio, riding for VR46 Ducati, encountered a severe accident at Turn 9, causing him to tumble extensively across the gravel.
After recently suffering a dislocated left shoulder and acknowledging that he was far from peak fitness ahead of this weekend, the Italian's situation has raised doubts about his ability to continue in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
If he is fit enough to proceed, he will need to participate in Q1 after finishing Practice in 13th place.
During the second practice session, Marc Marquez seemed less at ease compared to his performance earlier in the day. Nonetheless, he managed to achieve his fastest lap on his #2 Gresini Ducati, securing him a third-place finish, just ahead of Bastianini.
Quartararo led Pramac's Franco Morbidelli, while Marco Bezzecchi secured seventh place riding the VR46 Ducati.
Maverick Vinales led Aprilia by securing the eighth position, while Pedro Acosta was the sole KTM rider to advance to Q2, even though he had an early crash in the session. Aleix Espargaro rounded out the top 10 for Aprilia.
During the second practice session, every KTM rider experienced a crash. Jack Miller went down early in the session and finished in 11th place. Similarly, Brad Binder had an accident on his last lap, resulting in a 15th place finish and leaving him in Q1.
A mishap involving Alex Marquez led to his 14th place finish in the session, while mechanical issues limited Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse) to 16th place.
Johann Zarco was the highest-placed Honda rider, finishing 12th for the LCR team, as Yamaha’s Alex Rins missed the event due to sickness.
