DTM Unveils 2019 Calendar with New Circuits as W Series Joins the Race Weekend Line-up

DTM authorities have announced a schedule for the 2019 season consisting of nine events, including the addition of two new tracks, Zolder and Assen. The newly introduced W Series is set to join as a supporting event at several of these races.

The ITR, which oversees DTM, announced the updated calendar on Friday morning. This new schedule has one less event compared to 2018. However, two joint events with Super GT are still in the planning stages and will be revealed soon.

Officials from DTM have announced a schedule consisting of nine rounds for the 2019 season, which includes the addition of two new tracks, Zolder and Assen. Meanwhile, the newly introduced W Series will be featured as a support event at several selected races.

On Friday morning, the ITR, which oversees DTM, announced a new calendar. This schedule includes one less round compared to 2018. However, there are still plans to announce two joint events with Super GT.

The circuits at Zandvoort, the Red Bull Ring, and the Hungaroring have been removed from the schedule. Instead, new races will take place at Zolder from May 17-19 and Assen from July 19-21. The season opener and the final event will both occur at Hockenheim, with the concluding race scheduled for October 4-6, 2019.

The statement also verified that the newly introduced W Series, which is exclusively for women, will serve as a supporting event for the DTM in six out of the nine rounds. The inaugural season of this championship is set to begin from May 3 to 5 at Hockenheim and will additionally make appearances at Zolder, Misano, Norisring, Assen, and Brands Hatch.

The European Formula 3 series, which does not yet have a name, will be a supporting act for the DTM at all of its nine events. This series will be transformed into a regional competition in 2019, coinciding with the introduction of the FIA's new international championship that is replacing GP3.

Schedule for the 2019

1. The races at Hockenheim are scheduled for May 3rd to 5th.

2. Zolder will host its event from May 17th to 19th.

3. Misano's races are set for June 7th to 9th.

4. Norisring will see action from July 5th to 7th.

5. The Assen event is planned for July 19th to 21st.

The BMW driver had a tough Saturday at Hockenheim, as a crash during FP3 prevented him from participating in qualifying, leading to a 16th place finish in the first race.

In a stunning comeback, Wittmann propelled his BMW M4 to the fastest lap, surpassing Audi's Rast in the year's last 20-minute showdown.

Marco Wittmann, who has won the DTM championship twice, secured the pole position for the last race of the 2018 season. He achieved this by outperforming title hopeful Rene Rast during the qualifying session at the Hockenheimring.

The BMW driver had a tough Saturday at Hockenheim. A crash during the third practice session prevented him from participating in the qualifying round, and he ended up finishing in 16th place in the first race.

In a dramatic comeback, Wittmann propelled his BMW M4 to the forefront of the leaderboard, surpassing Audi's Rast in the year's last 20-minute showdown.

Rast aimed to strengthen his position in the title competition, taking the lead after the initial round of laps. Although the Audi driver managed to slightly better his opening performance with a 1 minute 32.737 seconds lap, Wittmann surpassed him by clocking a 1 minute 32.683 seconds lap in the last minute.

In a significant achievement, Rast succeeded in qualifying ahead of championship frontrunner Gary Paffett, thereby earning an additional point in the title race, as Paffett, driving for Mercedes, secured the third spot in qualifying.

In contrast to Rast and Paffett, another contender for the title, Paul di Resta, did not manage to secure a spot in the top ten during qualifying and will begin the second race from the eleventh position. Despite this, di Resta remains in second place in the drivers' championship, with only 14 points separating the top three competitors.

Beginning from third position, Paffett only needs to follow Rast closely to secure his second series victory, 13 years after his initial win.

On the second row, Gary Paffett lines up alongside BMW driver Bruno Spengler, while Augusto Farfus secured the fifth position, finishing just in front of Edoardo Mortara, who took sixth place.

Joel Eriksson and Philipp Eng make up the fourth row for BMW, securing seventh and eighth positions. Meanwhile, Nico Muller and Timo Glock round out the top ten on the grid, taking ninth and tenth places.

Di Resta ended up in third place in the drivers' standings, falling behind Rast's Audi, which claimed victory in both races over the weekend.

Paffett expressed his amazement, stating, "This is truly unbelievable. Today marks the greatest day of my life. My first championship win back in 2005 happened so quickly."

Over the past 13 years, I've dedicated my efforts to returning to a leading position. It's been a lengthy journey, but this year, the team provided me with an excellent car. I've consistently enjoyed driving it during the qualifying rounds. It's still somewhat unbelievable to me.

Throughout the majority of the race, I found myself racing solo, which gave me ample opportunity to reflect on my circumstances. As the race neared its conclusion, I caught myself counting down the laps, thinking, "Just five more laps left in my DTM career," followed by "only 4, then 3, 2, and finally 1 lap to go."

"There was a moment when I nearly lost control because of it. However, winning the championship is an incredible experience."

Gary Paffett secured his second championship title, marking a triumphant conclusion for Mercedes after 30 years in the series. This victory comes as the German automaker gears up for its debut as a factory team in the Formula E series for the 2019/20 season.

After competing in 185 races, the British driver secured his final victory in the DTM series. Paffett will transition to the Formula E championship for the 2018/19 season, joining the driver lineup of his current team, HWA.

"I've really enjoyed working with this group. I want to express my gratitude to each team member for their dedication to improving the car. In any case, we've achieved our goal!"
