Aston Martin Triumphs in Race for Andy Cowell: Red Bull’s Pursuit Comes Up Short
Did Red Bull attempt to recruit Andy Cowell, the former Mercedes engineer and now the new head at Aston Martin?
Aston Martin succeeded in securing one of Formula 1's top engine specialists.
There were inquiries regarding whether Red Bull attempted to recruit Andy Cowell for their Powertrains initiative.
Cowell has been appointed as the new group CEO at Aston Martin.
Significantly, he managed the engine that propelled Mercedes to the forefront of F1 manufacturing.
Formula 1 is set to enter a new phase of engine technology in 2026, with Red Bull planning to produce their own engines via their Powertrains division, in collaboration with Ford.
However, did Red Bull Powertrains make an attempt to recruit Cowell to head their project?
Team Principal Christian Horner described Andy as an excellent individual, noting his impressive engineering skills.
"He excelled in his role at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, playing a crucial part as the primary support for the project."
"He chose to depart from Mercedes and take a break from Formula 1, and naturally, I believe that every engine manufacturer reached out to him during that time."
"Once he chose to take a break, we arranged different plans."
"We're pleased with the plans, but he has assumed a position at Aston Martin that doesn't involve engines."
Cowell’s latest position at Aston Martin essentially makes him the head of the Formula 1 team that is owned by billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
Aston Martin plans to step into the new engine regulation period in 2026 with a fresh facility in Silverstone, partnering with Honda for their engines.
Aston Martin is optimistic about returning to their previous performance level in 2025, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll confirmed to continue with the team.
Alonso's top-three finish in Bahrain at the opening race of 2023 suggested promising prospects, but this season, they have fallen behind Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari in the competition against Red Bull.
