Aston Martin and Mercedes Gear Up for High-Stakes Battle Over Max Verstappen’s Future
Aston Martin is sparing no expense in their rivalry with Mercedes over Max Verstappen
"I still think Max will switch to Mercedes in 2026"
A former Dutch driver for Red Bull has shown support for Aston Martin in their efforts to ultimately secure Max Verstappen.
The ongoing speculation about Verstappen's future has been a major focus in Formula 1 throughout this year. This is in spite of his ongoing dominance, which seems poised to secure him a fourth straight championship this season.
However, disputes involving Christian Horner, Helmut Marko, and his father Jos Verstappen at different points during the season have caused competitors to hope they can sign the F1 champion.
Earlier, Mercedes' Toto Wolff expressed his admiration for Verstappen. Although it now appears clear that Verstappen will remain with Red Bull next year, there could be a more extended competition to secure his signature in the future.
Robert Doornbos, who previously served as a test and reserve driver for Red Bull and is currently an F1 analyst, commented that Max Verstappen continues to maintain a positive relationship with Mercedes.
"Mercedes has a vacancy for the 2025 season, and it is expected that they will reveal during the Monza weekend that Kimi Antonelli will make his Formula 1 debut, partnering with George Russell."
"I remain confident that Max will become part of Mercedes in 2026, despite Aston Martin's efforts and significant spending to attract him."
Doornbos had earlier stated, "By having two-time champion Fernando Alonso on their team and reaching out to Max Verstappen, their goal is to secure the top talents."
Aston Martin has openly expressed their goal of advancing to the leading position in Formula 1.
The substantial wealth of billionaire Lawrence Stroll turns their aspirations into achievable goals, and he has already funded a new agreement to retain Alonso until the conclusion of 2026.
The Formula 1 team is proud to unveil their state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and has established a new partnership with Honda for their engines.
The new F1 regulations that take effect in 2026 will provide all teams on the grid with the opportunity to start off stronger and potentially outpace their competitors.
Aston Martin is not only working to lure Verstappen but is also considered a potential future home for Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s chief technical officer.
That said, Mercedes continues to be a compelling option for any driver, possibly even Verstappen, with speculation in the F1 community suggesting that their 2026 engine might become the benchmark for other teams.
