Alpine Joins High-Stakes Battle for Adrian Newey with Financial Backing and Briatore’s Vision
Surprising F1 team joins pursuit of Adrian Newey, declares “we have the funding”
“We have the funding and backing from the chairman”
Alpine is now competing to hire the highly sought-after Adrian Newey.
The competition to secure his contract has primarily been a contest between Aston Martin and Ferrari, though it appears he has other alternatives available as well.
Newey has engaged in "quite comprehensive" discussions with Flavio Briatore, who has recently taken on the role of executive adviser at Alpine, according to a report by the BBC.
According to the report, Newey is considering his choices, which involve a proposal from Aston Martin and interest from his previous team, Williams.
The inclusion of Enstone-based Alpine introduces an intriguing new dimension to the future of F1's most sought-after individual.
Newey is set to step down from his role as the chief technology officer at Red Bull early next year, potentially allowing him to join a new Formula 1 team in time to impact their 2026 vehicle design.
This implies that Newey might still play a crucial role in the forthcoming F1 rule changes, with potential employers anticipating that he could transform them into the leading team in the sport.
Formula 1 veteran Briatore, who has collaborated with championship winners Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, has suggested something about Newey.
"Who is that?! He's too frugal for my taste," he quipped to F1.com.
"Additionally, you are engaging in commerce, you are operating a business, and you are communicating with others."
"Alpine was somewhat sidelined, and it seemed like no one was discussing Alpine anymore, if you understand what I mean."
"We've reached our goal; we have the necessary funding, the chairman's backing, and a strong team supporting us. If an opportunity arises, we'll be ready to take it. It's as straightforward as that."
“But only if it benefits the team."
"It's not about boosting my ego; I choose this engineer and that engineer because a single person can't transform the entire team. There are many instances where people try to buy their way to success and it doesn't work."
"You can't purchase a winning culture; you can buy anything else you want."
"Many individuals make numerous purchases, but the outcomes don't quite match the amount they spend."
Briatore was questioned about the feasibility of bringing Newey on board.
“Anything can happen in life,” he replied.
In addition to hiring Briatore, Alpine has appointed Oliver Oakes as the team principal.
In 2025, rookie driver Jack Doohan will be given an opportunity to race alongside Pierre Gasly.
