Alpine Boss Bruno Famin Dismisses Rumors of Benching Esteban Ocon for Canadian GP
Bruno Famin refutes claims that Alpine considered sidelining Esteban Ocon for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Alpine's team principal, Bruno Famin, asserts that the idea of replacing Esteban Ocon for the Canadian race was never on the table.
Alpine's head, Bruno Famin, mentioned that the team never considered sidelining Esteban Ocon for the Canadian Grand Prix following his collision with teammate Pierre Gasly in Monaco.
Ocon caused a crash with his teammate Gasly during the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, which upset Alpine's team principal Famin. Famin cautioned that there would be "repercussions" for the incident.
Following the incident, there was a lot of speculation that Ocon, who is set to depart from Alpine at the season's end, might be removed from this weekend's race in Montreal. However, Famin dismissed these false claims, asserting that such a scenario was never considered.
"It has never come up for discussion,” he mentioned to Sky Sports F1 while in Canada.
"We maintain professionalism at all times. If any issues arise, we engage in discussions to determine the necessary steps to enhance our performance for the next race. However, sidelining him for a race has never been considered.”
In a statement prior to this weekend’s race in Montreal, Ocon dismissed claims that the crash in Monaco had any bearing on his upcoming departure from Alpine.
Famin reiterated Ocon's statements, clarifying that the Frenchman's exit had been planned for months after ongoing discussions.
"I am more concerned with future events than past ones," stated Famin.
"I've mentioned this multiple times before regarding Esteban and Pierre. We've been having discussions for months, and with Esteban, it was pretty evident that we were approaching the conclusion of our cycle."
"He has been part of our team for five years and will continue with us through the remaining 16 races of the season. I am confident in his professionalism and believe we will achieve excellent results together."
Famin was questioned about whether the speculations regarding a private conversation with Ocon before the Monaco race were accurate.
Famin emphasized that he never engages in direct conversations with the drivers about matters like this.
"During our races, we all communicate simultaneously to ensure everyone receives the same information at the same moment."
“We made it clear before the Monaco race, just as we had done for the races prior to that. Our position was always clear.”
Famin confirmed that Alpine’s young driver, Jack Doohan, who had minimal track time during a rain-affected FP1 session in Montreal, is being considered as a potential replacement for Ocon next season.
"Jack is a possibility," he stated. "We're getting him ready. He recently underwent testing in Zeltweg, and he has a rather extensive testing schedule."
"We're pleased with this outcome and will observe how he progresses. He is definitely one of the options we have available."
