Alonso Tops Rain-Soaked Friday Practice as Verstappen Faces Engine Woes at the 2024 F1 Canadian Grand Prix
2024 F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Friday Practice Highlights
A summary of all the events from the two practice sessions on Friday at the Canadian Grand Prix.
This wraps up our live reporting of Friday’s practice sessions in Canada.
We will return tomorrow to walk you through all the events from the final practice and qualifying sessions, with more unpredictable weather on the horizon.
The waving of the chequered flag signifies the conclusion of Friday's practice sessions in Montreal.
Alonso tops the timesheets in FP2, followed by Russell, Aston Martin’s Stroll, Leclerc, and Ricciardo.
Leclerc experienced a spin at the hairpin but impressively managed to execute a full 360-degree turn and proceeded without any additional issues.
Following a brief period of inactivity on the track, racers are beginning to return, now equipped with intermediate tires after a heavy downpour.
Ted Kravitz, the pitlane reporter for Sky Sports F1, has stated that Verstappen's session is over.
"Max Verstappen has finished for the session. His work is done," reported Kravitz.
The issue seems to be with the power unit, specifically within the energy recovery system. They have diagnosed the problem and determined that some component requires replacement.
"This task will keep them working late into the night in Canada."
Alonso has reclaimed the leading position with a time of 1 minute and 15.810 seconds.
Russell has moved into second place, trailing the Aston Martin by approximately four-tenths of a second.
Max Verstappen has recently come back to the pit lane and exited his vehicle, which was emitting smoke. His RB20 is now cordoned off with caution tape, indicating a potential electrical problem.
Technicians are currently examining the back of the vehicle to determine the issue.
The rankings are constantly shifting right now, with Leclerc moving into first place with a time of 1m16.556s. Alonso and Hamilton have also bettered their times and are close behind.
Even though a number of drivers are sliding and veering off course at the hairpin due to the increasing rain, some are managing to improve their times.
Alonso has broken into the 1-minute and 17-second range, taking the lead ahead of his Aston Martin teammate Stroll. Meanwhile, Hamilton has improved his time and moved his Mercedes up to third place.
Magnussen recently experienced a wide turn and skidded over the grass at the chicane, apparently due to the unexpected rain.
Drivers are becoming more confident and accelerating in the dry weather, causing times to drop.
Alonso has just set the fastest time in his Aston Martin, clocking in at 1 minute and 20.451 seconds.
Ricciardo is trailing by two-tenths of a second in second place, with Gasly in third. Following them are the Mercedes duo, Russell and Hamilton.
Gasly keeps adding more laps as the weather stays dry, setting a new fastest time of 1 minute and 20.789 seconds.
Gasly has overtaken Hamilton for the leading position, recording a time of 1 minute 24.389 seconds using soft tires on his Alpine.
Hamilton was testing out Mercedes' upgraded front wing in that initial session.
However, he has been instructed to pit so that Mercedes can switch back to the previous setup (used by both cars in the first practice session) due to the potential for deteriorating weather conditions.
Despite the ongoing drizzle, Hamilton clocked the fastest lap on soft tires, recording a time of 1 minute and 34.810 seconds.
Even with light rain coming down, a number of drivers, such as those from Red Bull and Mercedes, are venturing onto the track using soft tires.
As the session begins, the rain is beginning to intensify…
The green light is on, signaling the start of the second practice session.
If you didn't catch it, 1997 world champion and Sky Sports F1 guest analyst Jacques Villeneuve had some harsh criticism for Daniel Ricciardo.
"It seems that his reputation has sustained his presence in Formula 1 more than his performance has."
Welcome back. Our live updates of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix are ongoing.
Coming up in 10 minutes is the second practice session.
Montreal is experiencing rainfall once more…
That's it for the moment, but tune in again tonight for FP2, beginning at 10pm UK time.
This is the outcome of a practice session in Montreal that experienced varying wet and dry conditions.
A lot happened in the final moments when the drivers reduced their speed while using the soft tires.
Norris sets the fastest time for McLaren with a lap of 1 minute 24.435 seconds, outpacing the Ferraris driven by Sainz and Leclerc by 0.328 seconds.
Hamilton secures the fourth position, while Verstappen finishes in fifth place.
Greetings! A number of drivers, such as both Ferrari teammates, Verstappen, and Norris, are currently venturing onto the track using the soft tires.
