Alonso Shines in Rain-Soaked Canadian GP Practice as Norris Sets Early Pace
Results of Friday Practice for 2024 Canadian Grand Prix
The outcome of Friday's practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, marking the ninth round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship.
Second Practice Session
Fernando Alonso led the timing charts during a practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, which was once again disrupted by rain.
Taking advantage of the dry track at the start of FP2, Alonso clocked multiple quick laps to lead the standings, finishing 0.463 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell.
Alonso's teammate from Aston Martin, Lance Stroll, secured third place, followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Daniel Ricciardo.
Kevin Magnussen secured sixth place, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon, and Sergio Perez.
A heavy rainstorm toward the end hindered drivers from bettering their lap times and made it necessary for everyone to switch to intermediate tires.
Max Verstappen faced a challenging time during the second practice session, missing half of it due to an issue with the Energy Recovery System on his Red Bull car.
Session 1
Lando Norris from the McLaren team led the way in the initial practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, despite the session being disrupted by severe storms in Montreal.
For 20 minutes, there was a halt in activity while marshals worked to remove the excess standing water. When drivers were finally permitted to test the conditions, they opted for either intermediate or full wet tires.
The situation got significantly better when the rain eased up, allowing all participants to change to slick tires for the final part of the session. Norris recorded the quickest lap with a time of 1 minute and 24.435 seconds.
Norris led by three-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, with Sainz's teammate Charles Leclerc in third place.
Lewis Hamilton secured the fourth position for Mercedes, surpassing Red Bull's current world champion Max Verstappen.
Oscar Piastri's second McLaren secured the sixth position, while Pierre Gasly and Valtteri Bottas claimed seventh and eighth places for Alpine and Sauber, respectively.
Sergio Perez from Red Bull and George Russell from Mercedes finished within the top ten.
Sauber's Zhou Guanyu triggered a red flag halfway through the session after losing control on a puddle and crashing into the wall, eventually coming to a halt on the track.
