Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumours, Calls for Team Effort to Revive Aston Martin’s Fortunes
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey
Fernando Alonso rejects "excuses" as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might soon reveal they have signed Newey.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be at liberty to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his potential next team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still only rumors, and I believe it's not a single person's responsibility to set things right."
"It's mainly about assessing our current situation and our output. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured the 11th spot at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could be a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, similar to this one for me, will remain entirely private."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races very close to each other, usually just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I had a slight edge. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which earned me an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that the main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull suggests that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from the back of the pack to finishing on the podium in just four months, providing a clear example of rapid improvement.
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched Mercedes in performance for the initial four races, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, "I believe that until the car gets an upgrade, this is the best we can do, and it simply isn't sufficient."
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe there won’t be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components.”
"This is our strategy. The team understands what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. We remain united and continue to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
