Alonso Addresses Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Excuses, We Need to Get Better
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement expected this week
Fernando Alonso dismisses excuses amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, as speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement persists.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the near future.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified lately about Aston Martin being his potential next team, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are just rumors at this point and emphasized that resolving issues isn't a responsibility that falls on just one person.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and output. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and then make plans to improve things for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new establishment at Silverstone and extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend.
"During a particularly inspiring weekend, such as this one for me, I am certain that it will remain entirely anonymous."
This year, Lance and I have been very close in terms of performance, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other. Today was another one of those weekends where I had a slight edge. I felt really good about the car and pushed it beyond its limits, which earned me an 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's frustrating. We need to be patient and recognize that the main objective is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"We're currently trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, so it's clear we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“Over the course of four months, McLaren went from finishing last to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were neck and neck, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not one to make excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will make advancements in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying, "I believe that until we improve the car, this performance is unacceptable."
"Fell short in Monza. Disappointing in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless new components are introduced, there won't be significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's our strategy. The team understands what's at stake and is giving it their all. We remain united and continue to push forward. We earned one point last weekend, and today we were on the verge of securing two. This is the challenge we face."
