By the year 2025, artificial intelligence is expected to revolutionize the landscape of democratic politics, and the changes might not all be negative.

India's leader, Narendra Modi, has leveraged artificial intelligence to instantaneously convert his speeches into multiple languages for his varied voter base, showcasing AI's potential in making democratic nations more inclusive. In South Korea, presidential hopefuls utilized AI-generated avatars during their campaigns to simultaneously address a multitude of voter inquiries. Furthermore, we're witnessing the emergence of AI in enhancing fundraising activities and boosting voter turnout initiatives. Artificial intelligence is beginning to complement conventional survey techniques, offering campaigns a more cost-effective and rapid means of gathering data. Additionally, candidates for Congress have begun to employ AI-driven robocalling technology to connect with voters regarding pertinent issues.

This narrative originates from the WIRED World in 2025, our yearly forecast of emerging trends.

By 2025, these patterns will persist. Artificial Intelligence doesn't have to outperform human specialists to enhance the efforts of a busy campaign worker, or to create advertising content comparable to that produced by a novice campaign team member or helper. Given the competitive nature of politics, any technological tool that can provide a competitive edge, or simply attract notice, will be utilized.

Politics often revolves around local issues, and artificial intelligence tools are touted to level the playing field in democratic processes. Generally, candidates operate with limited assets, making the decision to leverage AI assistance or go without any support a critical one. In the 2024 US presidential primaries, an underdog candidate named Jason Palmer, who was virtually unknown, managed to outperform Joe Biden in the American Samoa primary. He achieved this surprising victory through the use of messages crafted by AI and by deploying an AI-generated online persona.

On a nationwide scale, artificial intelligence (AI) applications tend to further empower those who are already in positions of strength. Combining human skills with AI capabilities usually outperforms relying on AI alone: The greater the human expertise available, the better AI can be leveraged. The wealthiest political campaigns won't let AI take the lead, but they will eagerly harness AI's potential to gain a competitive edge.

However, the allure of AI support is likely to fuel its uptake, there are significant hazards involved. Incorporating computers into any procedure inherently alters it. For instance, scalable automation could revolutionize political campaigning by shifting from a universal approach to targeted persuasion, allowing politicians to tailor their messages to individual preferences. Furthermore, creating new reliance on technology can introduce fragility: leveraging the benefits of automation may involve reducing human supervision, leading to turmoil when essential computer systems fail.

Politics is inherently combative. Whenever a candidate or political party employs artificial intelligence, it becomes a target for cyberattacks by rivals. These adversaries might seek to alter the AI's operations, intercept its communications, or completely disable it. Moreover, the type of misinformation campaigns that entities such as Russia have deployed on social platforms will also start to focus on influencing machines.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands apart from conventional computing by aiming to integrate the kind of common sense and decision-making that transcends mere rules. However, there isn't a unified ethical framework or consensus on what constitutes fairness among humans. This diversity will likely result in AI technologies being tailored to suit various groups and beliefs, leading to a scenario where factions may distrust the AI developed by their adversaries. Additionally, there will be a widespread cautious attitude towards AI systems developed by corporations, which may contain undisclosed prejudices.

The onset of a trend that is set to proliferate across democracies globally, potentially gaining momentum over the years, marks just the beginning. It's crucial for everyone, particularly those skeptical about artificial intelligence and worried about its ability to intensify biases and discrimination, to understand that AI is poised to infiltrate every facet of democratic life. Rather than a top-down imposition, these changes will emerge organically, from the grassroots level. Politicians and electoral campaigns will turn to AI tools for their utility. Legal professionals and political advocacy organizations will follow suit. Judges will incorporate AI in drafting their rulings to enhance efficiency. Media outlets will adopt AI as a means to offset budget reductions. Additionally, bureaucratic and regulatory entities will integrate AI into their existing algorithm-based frameworks for assigning various rewards and sanctions.

It's uncertain if this will lead to an improved democratic process or a fairer global landscape. It's important to monitor how authorities leverage these mechanisms, as well as their potential to give voice to those without power. As members of democratic societies, it's our duty to relentlessly promote the use of AI technologies to enhance democratic principles rather than exacerbate its negative aspects.

Using AI Profiles on Social Media Isn't Necessarily a Bad Move

Last week, Meta sparked quite a conversation by revealing its plans to introduce a large number of fully synthetic users to its network in the upcoming period.

Connor Hayes, Meta's Vice President of Product for Generative AI, shared with The Financial Times his vision that, eventually, AIs will become a standard feature on their platforms, much like user accounts. He explained that these AIs would have their own profiles, complete with bios and profile pictures, and possess the capability to create and disseminate AI-driven content on the platform. He believes this integration is the future direction of the platform.

It's worrisome that Meta appears content to clutter its platform with low-quality AI content, speeding up the degradation of the internet as we've come to know it. Observers have pointed out that Facebook was already flooded with bizarre AI-created profiles, many of which ceased activity some time ago. For instance, there was "Liv," described as a "proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller, your realest source of life’s ups & downs," a character that captured widespread attention for its clumsily constructed identity. Meta has started to remove these older, artificial accounts after they failed to attract any genuine user interaction.

Let's take a break from criticizing Meta for a bit. It's important to recognize that AI-created social characters can serve as an important resource for researchers aiming to understand how AI can replicate human actions.

In a project named GovSim, conducted towards the end of 2024, the effectiveness of analyzing interactions between AI entities was demonstrated. The team conducting the study aimed to investigate how humans cooperate when they have a common resource, like land for raising animals. Elinor Ostrom, an economist who won a Nobel prize several years prior, had already proven that communities are capable of managing shared resources responsibly by forming agreements and collaborating informally, rather than exploiting these resources, even in the absence of formal regulations.

Max Kleiman-Weiner, a faculty member at the University of Washington and a contributor to the GovSim project, mentions that it drew inspiration partially from a Stanford initiative known as Smallville, a topic I covered earlier in AI Lab. Similar to Farmville, Smallville is a simulation featuring characters that engage and converse with one another, driven by advanced language models.

Kleiman-Weiner and his team aimed to discover whether artificial intelligence entities could exhibit cooperative behavior similar to what Ostrom observed. They evaluated 15 diverse language learning models from major developers like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic by placing them in three hypothetical situations: a community of fishermen utilizing a communal lake; a collective of shepherds grazing their sheep on shared land; and a consortium of factory operators tasked with reducing their overall emissions.

In 43 of the 45 tests conducted, the AI entities were unable to distribute resources appropriately, yet the more advanced versions showed improvements. "There was a significant link between the capability of the LLM and its success in maintaining cooperative behavior," Kleiman-Weiner explained to me.

Additionally, when researchers enhanced their virtual agents with prompts meant to encourage consideration of their actions' consequences, such as asking, "What would happen if everyone acted this way?", they discovered that the simulations were more likely to maintain their resources effectively. This study illustrates how AI can mimic community interactions and potentially offer valuable insights into encouraging future AI agents to interact harmoniously.

This doesn't imply that Meta intends to conduct significant research studies with its AI users, even though the company is known for employing virtual users to evaluate its systems.

Meta is probably inspired by the success of Character AI and similar firms, where users engage with various chatbot characters. It's said that users dedicate around two hours daily to using Character's platform, and it's clear Meta aims to replicate this level of user engagement on its own site.

Mark Zuckerberg has indicated to investors that AI characters will play a significant role in the company's future prospects. "I strongly believe that this will become a key trend in the coming years," he commented during Meta's Q3 2024 earnings discussion.

Should Meta manage to devise a strategy that enables its AI users to generate increased interaction, it will still be embarking on a trial that could ultimately lead to a platform overwhelmed by disorder.

During a full day at CES, I adorned a small yellow wristband. To those around me, it likely appeared as a common fitness band. However, throughout the day, this yellow device from Bee AI, named the Pioneer wearable, captured everything in my surroundings. Unlike standard recording apps that store audio, this device analyzed my discussions and subsequently provided me with customized task lists and transcribed overviews of my face-to-face conversations.

Just a few days before the expo kicked off, I had a conversation with the creator of a startup named Omi, which was introduced to the public for the first time today. Can you guess its function? It captures everything happening in your surroundings to build a log of activities, then uses artificial intelligence to sift through this data, offering you useful insights and recommendations for your daily tasks, almost serving as a digital assistant. The Omi device is designed to be worn around your neck or, more effectively, attached to the side of your head near your temple, as it contains an electroencephalogram. Omi suggests that by focusing your thoughts on communicating with the device, it will become alert and ready to process your commands.

We've entered a new era characterized by AI-powered wearable devices that constantly capture our surroundings. Initially, voice assistants made their debut in speakers and smartphones, necessitating a physical interaction or a specific command to begin listening. However, the emerging generation of technological aids, including the soon-to-be-released Friend pendant, operates discreetly, collecting data without any direct input. These devices are designed to be perpetually attentive.

The prominent devices in this sector are usually affordable, with Bee AI's watch priced at only $50 and Omi's adhesive bead costing $89. However, the true innovation lies in the software, which typically necessitates a subscription because it utilizes various extensive language models to examine your discussions.

Bee AI was established by Maria de Lourdes Zollo and Ethan Sutin, who both have backgrounds at Squad, a company founded by Sutin that allowed users to share their screens for media viewing during video calls, enabling remote simultaneous movie or YouTube video watching. This venture was later absorbed by X, formerly known as Twitter, where the duo spent a short period contributing to the development of Twitter Spaces. Prior to this, Zollo has gained experience at Tencent and at Musical.ly, the latter of which eventually evolved into what is now known as TikTok.

Sutin was intrigued by the concept of a personal AI assistant during the peak of chatbot popularity in 2016, yet the technology hadn't advanced enough at that time. However, the situation has changed significantly. Last February, his company introduced its Bee AI platform in a beta version, with a vibrant community contributing insights. The company only started offering its Pioneer device for sale just over a week ago. (The name “Bee” suggests the notion of omnipresent computing, reminiscent of a bee that buzzes around gathering data.) Utilizing the company's hardware isn't a necessity for accessing Bee AI, as it's accessible through an iPhone app, but Zollo mentions that the wearable enhances the user experience by enabling all-day continuous recording. Additionally, an Android application is expected to be released by the end of this month.

The device is uncomplicated in design, featuring dual microphones to reduce background noise. According to Sutin, its sensitivity is such that it can pick up conversations in noisy settings just as well as the wearer can. It offers flexibility in how it can be worn, either strapped to the wrist or attached to an article of clothing. At its core is an "Action" button; a single press temporarily disables the microphones, with another press reactivating them. A longer press of the button allows for customizable actions, such as analyzing the ongoing discussion or summoning the "Buzz" AI for inquiries. However, it lacks a built-in speaker, meaning any responses from the AI are relayed through the user's smartphone. An illuminated red LED signifies the microphone is off, but curiously, there's no visual cue, like a green LED, to show when it's actively recording ambient sounds.

Zollo mentions that constantly having a green LED on could negatively affect the claimed seven-day battery longevity of the device. However, not including this feature might place Bee AI in a questionable position regarding recording regulations, which differ across states in the USA. Although the device doesn't exactly save audio recordings, users can access complete transcripts of conversations, which might not always be perfectly accurate. Sutin assures that all data captured is handled with the utmost confidentiality, emphasizing that the firm has no intention of making money from this data nor will it be disclosed to external parties. He also reassures that no individuals will have access to this information.

Sutin points out that discussions aren't handled directly on the device due to the existing limitations of edge processing, particularly the impact on battery duration. Consequently, data processing is conducted in the cloud for the time being. Depending on the specific task at hand, Bee AI utilizes a variety of large language models. This assortment encompasses both proprietary and open-source options, such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and Google's Gemini, in addition to some models that the firm manages on its own servers.

According to Sutin, Bee AI primarily caters to individuals whose professions involve extensive speaking. For those who spend their days in silence at their desks, Bee AI's wearable device offers limited functionality unless they initiate conversation with it. However, its continuous recording feature allows it to capture and recall details from discussions had during the day. The device's ability to accurately identify and differentiate between speakers in a conversation varies, as it may not always recognize the identities of those around the user. Nonetheless, it is capable of distinguishing between various voices and organizing dialogue transcripts to reflect different participants. Users have the option to assign names to these voices. Additionally, the device can store personal information about the user and is equipped with a feature to delete specific data upon request, should the user decide they prefer certain information not be retained.

Within the application, you're able to view a brief overview of your day's discussions, and as the evening approaches, it crafts a concise recap of your day, complete with the geographical locations of where these discussions took place, displayed on a map. However, the feature that truly stands out is located in the middle tab, labeled “To-Dos.” These tasks are formulated automatically, derived from your spoken interactions. For instance, during a conversation with my editor about snapping a photo of a product, astonishingly, Bee AI had already set a reminder for me to "Ensure to capture a photo for Mike." (Apparently, I had mentioned his name while talking.) These tasks can be marked as done once you've accomplished them.

It's important to note that many of these tasks may not actually be necessary for me. Chances are, you might find yourself removing the majority of them. However, when it does succeed in identifying these tasks correctly, it's quite an impressive experience. The Bee AI tool has the capability to integrate with your Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts, allowing you to request summaries of emails or to find out about upcoming events in your calendar. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test this feature.

According to Zollo, Bee AI operates on a freemium service plan, allowing users to access elementary memory recall and summarization capabilities with only the device. For access to a broader range of functionalities, such as third-party app integrations that the firm aims to enhance, a monthly subscription of $12 is required.

Omi's device is designed to adhere to your skull.

Nikita Shevchenko embarked on his journey as an entrepreneur at the young age of 14 by delving into cryptocurrency mining, and by 18, he had already sold his first business. His most recent endeavor is Omi, a device that can be worn around the neck as a pendant or attached to your forehead with the provided medical-grade adhesive. Should you choose the forehead option and overlook its odd appearance, Shevchenko claims that by focusing your thoughts on communicating with Omi, it will recognize and prepare to handle your command.

I haven't personally tested it, but according to him, Omi has been programmed to identify the distinct brain patterns that occur when you intend to communicate with the device, eliminating the need for a wake word and allowing you to simply think your command. However, this form of interaction is reserved for moments when you actively wish to use the device. For the rest of the time, Omi functions as a wearable audio recorder, continuously documenting your daily interactions much in the same way Bee AI does. This feature enables it to perform a variety of tasks such as converting spoken words into text, summarizing discussions, scheduling events in your calendar, and translating languages.

The functionality of the device relies on its connection to a smartphone and cloud services, distinguishing it from self-contained gadgets such as the Humane Ai Pin. According to Shevchenko, while Omi's software is open-source, it presently utilizes ChatGPT for its intelligence training. A notable difference between Omi and Bee AI is Omi's ecosystem, which supports a marketplace for contributions from external developers. This marketplace hosts various "apps" or modifications created by users to expand Omi's capabilities with popular applications. For instance, one can activate a feature that archives all daily conversation summaries into a specific Google Drive folder. These contributions can be uploaded to Omi's marketplace, where creators have the option to offer them for free or charge a fee. The platform has seen a significant number of apps thanks to Shevchenko distributing 5,000 early Omi devices to developers last year.

He mentions that in time, Omi aims to enable users to generate their own AI duplicates—ones capable of engaging with followers and responding to inquiries on their behalf. These clones could be released at no cost or offered through a subscription model, providing a potential source of extra income. This concept has begun to materialize via Omi's Personas platform, allowing users to craft an AI representation of a Twitter figure and interact with it.

In contrast to the Bee AI device, the Omi wearable includes a built-in light indicating it's actively recording and analyzing nearby discussions, signaling a form of tacit approval. Its power source is durable, sustaining up to three days on a single charge, and similar to the Bee, it assigns tasks tailored to the content of your conversations. Each evening, it prepares a schedule of objectives for the following day. Additionally, it offers guidance, providing a critique and advice after events such as job interviews, helping you improve for next time.

Shevchenko aims for the Omi to eventually interpret brain activity, enabling it to understand a person's thoughts. In contrast to Neuralink's approach that involves embedding a device into the brain, Shevchenko's strategy involves progressively increasing the number of electrodes attached to the scalp. Although he has managed to have the device formulate two words using an advanced wearable technology, achieving full thought interpretation remains a significant challenge.

The Omi can be purchased today for $89 and will be shipped within the next few weeks.

HumanPods

The idea of a constantly attentive, AI-enhanced wearable device might captivate you, yet if you're concerned about potential privacy invasions, be aware that not all the latest AI wearables are adopting an "always-on" strategy.

Natura Umana, a spinoff created by the minds at Rolling Square, a Swiss accessories firm, has introduced a set of wireless earphones named HumanPods. These earphones are equipped with microphones, and activating them requires a double-tap on an earbud to engage the built-in artificial intelligence.

Similar to the innovative Omi and Bee AI earbuds, HumanPods are crafted for all-day wear, albeit with a battery life that doesn't extend beyond a single day. Unlike typical in-ear designs, these earbuds comfortably rest on the ears and felt quite comfortable during my brief trial period at CES. Additionally, the device utilizes several expansive language models. However, instead of capturing all surrounding sounds, these earbuds focus primarily on the user's interactions with the AI.

There are several AI characters available for interaction. One of them, named Athena, specializes in fitness and health. The concept behind Athena is that by syncing your health and fitness tracking devices and applications, you can inquire about suitable exercises for the day. Athena will analyze your health metrics and propose a workout plan tailored to your specific needs, such as your recent sleep patterns and heart rate. I also interacted with Hector, an AI designed to act as a sort of "AI therapist." During our conversation about the pressures of attending CES, he offered advice on how to navigate the event with less stress, suggesting that I limit my interactions to a select few companies. Carlo Edoardo Ferraris, the founder of the company, mentioned that Hector includes a cautionary note that he is not a certified therapist.

Ferraris envisions a future where, akin to how we turn to various individuals in our lives for distinct purposes, there will be a specialized AI persona tailored to our unique requirements. His goal is to create a platform where individuals can share personas, such as an AI therapist created by a startup focusing on mental health.

The earphones are scheduled for release in the early months of this year, with compatibility for Android devices expected to either coincide with this release or follow in the subsequent quarter. As for the cost, there hasn't been a definitive price point established, but it's anticipated to be in the vicinity of $100. Additionally, a subscription will be required.

The launch of the Humane Ai Pin, which was among the most anticipated technology debuts of 2024, ended in failure. This event precedes the introduction of several AI-powered wearable devices. Shevchenko, the founder of Omi, is confident that his company is off to a stronger start than Humane, owing to the immediate availability of numerous applications that augment the functionality of their AI assistant. Ferraris is optimistic about the prospects of Natura Umana's wearable device, arguing that its success will stem from the device's use of wireless earbuds—a format consumers readily understand—and its app's design, which mirrors familiar messaging applications.

Frequently, gadgets such as these fall short of their lofty promises, with these perpetually attentive AI devices potentially not living up to the expectations set by their creators. However, these pioneers in the wearable tech sector are nudging us closer to a future where devices that listen to us constantly, whether worn on our wrists or heads, might actually become more useful. The idea of a microphone that is always listening could soon become accepted as standard. Yet, the inevitable privacy issues this advancement brings are likely to cause concern. It remains to be seen if these concerns will be significant enough to decelerate this ongoing progress.

Nvidia Unveils a $3,000 'Personal AI Supercomputer' for Home and Office Use

Nvidia, a leading supplier of computer chips to top firms developing their own AI technologies, is expanding its market reach. In response to the growing fascination with open source and DIY artificial intelligence, Nvidia has unveiled plans to launch a "personal AI supercomputer" priced starting at $3,000. This new offering, available later this year, is designed for individual use in homes or offices.

Nvidia's upcoming desktop device, named Digits, is set to hit the market in May and boasts a compact size comparable to a small book. It features an Nvidia "superchip" known as the GB10 Grace Blackwell, designed to enhance the processing speed required for training and operating AI models. Additionally, it is outfitted with 128 gigabytes of unified memory and offers up to 4 terabytes of NVMe storage, making it well-suited for managing particularly sizable AI applications.

"By equipping every data scientist, AI researcher, and student with an AI supercomputer, Huang stated in a pre-keynote announcement, they are enabled to actively participate and mold the era of artificial intelligence."

Nvidia has announced its Digits machine, an acronym that stands for "deep learning GPU intelligence training system." This system is capable of operating a single extensive language model that can have as many as 200 billion parameters, an indicator of the model's complexity and size. Currently, to achieve this, one would have to utilize cloud services from providers such as AWS or Microsoft, or construct a specialized system equipped with several AI-specific chips. Furthermore, Nvidia claims that by linking two Digits machines through a proprietary high-speed connection, they can support the most advanced version of Meta’s open source Llama model, which boasts 405 billion parameters.

Digits will simplify the process for enthusiasts and scholars to test models nearly matching the fundamental functions of OpenAI's GPT-4 or Google's Gemini from the comfort of their home labs or workspaces. However, the top-tier renditions of these exclusive models, situated in the vast data centers of Microsoft and Google, are probably more extensive and potent than what Digits could manage.

Nvidia has significantly profited from the surge in artificial intelligence. From Digital Dreams to Physical Realities: The Dawn of AI with Physical Intelligence

Current artificial intelligence systems exhibit an impressive resemblance to humans in their capacity to create text, audio, and visuals on demand. Yet, these technologies have predominantly been confined to virtual environments, rather than engaging with the tangible, three-dimensional space we occupy. Indeed, attempts to adapt these systems for real-world applications reveal significant limitations — consider the complexities involved in creating dependable and safe autonomous vehicles, for instance. Despite their intelligence, these systems lack an understanding of physical laws and are prone to generating misleading errors, often producing results that defy explanation.

This article originates from the WIRED World in 2025, our yearly forecast of trends.

This year marks a significant milestone as artificial intelligence (AI) transitions from existing solely in the digital realm to becoming a tangible part of our physical world. To achieve this, it's essential to redefine the operational logic of machines, integrating AI's computational intelligence with the operational capabilities of robotics. I refer to this advancement as "physical intelligence," which represents a new breed of intelligent machinery capable of navigating changing conditions, handling uncertainty, and making instantaneous decisions. Distinct from the conventional models employed in traditional AI, physical intelligence is anchored in the principles of physics, focusing on understanding the basic cause-and-effect relationships that govern the real world.

These capabilities enable models of physical intelligence to engage with and adjust to various environments. Within my research team at MIT, we are in the process of creating what we term as liquid networks, a new form of physical intelligence models. For example, in a specific experiment, we compared the performance of two drones in locating objects within a forest in summer, one controlled by a conventional AI model and the other by a liquid network, both initially guided by data collected by human pilots. Although both drones achieved similar success in tasks they were directly trained for, when faced with new challenges—such as finding objects in the winter or in a city landscape—the drone powered by the liquid network was the only one to successfully fulfill its mission. This outcome revealed to us that liquid networks, in contrast to standard AI systems which do not evolve post-training, have the capacity to continually learn and adapt based on new experiences, mirroring human learning processes.

Physical intelligence possesses the capability to comprehend and enact intricate directives from written or visual sources, effectively connecting digital directives with their physical counterparts. For instance, within our laboratory, we have engineered a system endowed with physical intelligence that is capable of rapidly conceptualizing and subsequently producing, via 3D printing, miniature robots in response to instructions such as "robot capable of advancing forward" or "robot able to grasp items", all within a span of less than a minute.

Several other research groups are advancing the field as well. For instance, the robotics company Covariant, initiated by Pieter Abbeel, a researcher from UC-Berkeley, is focused on creating intelligent chatbots similar to ChatGTP. These chatbots are designed to manage robotic arms on command. The startup has successfully raised over $222 million to further develop and implement sorting robots across warehouses around the world. Meanwhile, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have made impressive strides by showing that a robot equipped with only one camera and less precise movement capabilities can execute sophisticated parkour actions. This includes leaping onto obstacles double its height and jumping over spaces twice its length, all directed by a single neural network that's been trained through reinforcement learning.

In 2023, the focus was on converting text into images, and by 2024, this evolved into transforming text into videos. Looking ahead to 2025, we're poised to enter the age of tangible intelligence. This upcoming phase will introduce a new wave of technology, extending beyond just robots to include a variety of systems like electrical networks and intelligent home setups. These advancements will have the capability to understand our commands and carry out actions in the physical environment.

And indeed, expect these innovations to be brimming with AI functionalities. It's likely you'll be encouraged to try on quite a few of them.

Artificial Intelligence has taken center stage at CES, capturing the attention of the tech world and beyond in recent years. The 2024 CES event witnessed an overwhelming influx of AI innovations, marking a significant moment. Although the initial wave of enthusiasm has somewhat diminished, the ongoing excitement about the potential of AI ensures that interest remains high.

"Expect to witness AI-powered wearable devices from numerous suppliers at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)," states Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager at the market research company IDC. "It's unlikely to mirror last year's trend of numerous devices specifically designed for AI. Instead, AI will be integrated into current devices or serve as an added feature rather than being the sole function of the device."

As the benefits of the ongoing surge in artificial intelligence largely accrue to the top players in the field—such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta, thanks to their advanced and finely-tuned language technologies—emerging companies seeking to enter the competition are increasingly concentrating on enhancing the tangible aspects of how users interact with their products.

"Creating your own AI model isn't going to contribute any additional worth," states Anshel Sag, the lead analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy. "Therefore, the subsequent action is to deploy the AI. The simplest method for this is through the use of specific hardware."

In 2024, a surge of AI-integrated gadgets was noticed, each demonstrating different applications but primarily serving as tools for accessing AI beyond traditional smartphones and computers. These gadgets incorporated various technologies, including widely recognized platforms such as ChatGPT and custom-built software solutions, yet both approaches encountered challenges. Initial products like the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1 initiated this trend but didn't quite meet expectations. The wearable device known as the Friend necklace, which operates via a mobile app and features a microphone that is always on, sparked debates over privacy concerns. Meanwhile, some products hinted at more ambitious goals, such as the Plaud.AI pin, which currently offers meeting summaries but might evolve to participate in meetings on your behalf.

A multitude of AI-focused gadgets are on the horizon, with a range of them poised to hit the market. Some aim to genuinely enrich our lives, while others seem to incorporate AI functionalities more as a gimmick to capture attention. Regardless of their purpose, CES is set to be the premier venue for unveiling these innovations, where attendees can expect to see everything from new necklaces and eyewear to pins and, inevitably, headphones. The influx of promotional messages from companies eager to showcase their latest AI-enabled earbuds, designed for interactions with advanced chatbots reminiscent of the movie "Her," has been overwhelming. Additionally, there will be introductions in the more adult-oriented gadget category, though the details from those particular communications will be omitted here.

It remains to be seen if they will effectively or innovatively utilize chatbots and agents. Simply incorporating AI might have initially attracted the necessary funding for product development, but it might not suffice to convince consumers to purchase it. Currently, chatbots and AI agents haven't demonstrated sufficient practicality to lead to widespread adoption by consumers. Moreover, we've reached a saturation point with AI technology being ubiquitous. Therefore, the question arises: what sets your AI earbuds apart?

"Sag points out the issue many of these new companies face; if their unique selling point is AI, what occurs once it becomes a common asset? He notes, 'It's become a basic necessity.'"

Devices designed for AI-powered functions, initially thought to be a progressive advancement in artificial intelligence, haven't quite delivered groundbreaking benefits as anticipated.

"Ubrani points out that the functionalities and applications being showcased do not require specialized devices. He mentions that most of those capabilities are already achievable with your smartphone."

Within a span of twelve months, artificial intelligence has transitioned from an independent selling feature to essentially a marginally enhanced version of the ordinary.

Undoubtedly, there have been triumphs in AI-driven hardware, like the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. These glasses excel by blending AI with a variety of functions, such as photo capturing and music playback, extending far beyond the standalone capabilities of AI. Fable, an app favored by avid readers and those who love marathon-watching series, introduced an AI-generated summary of users' reading habits for the year 2024. This feature, intended for light-hearted entertainment, unexpectedly adopted a confrontational approach in some instances. For instance, Danny Groves received a summary questioning if he ever seeks out the viewpoint of a "straight, cis white man," following a categorization as a supporter of diverse narratives.

In her concluding remarks, book enthusiast Tiana Trammell offered this guidance: "Remember to occasionally delve into works by white authors as well, alright?"

Trammell was taken aback and discovered she wasn't the only one after discussing her encounters with Fable's summaries on Threads. "I got several messages," she mentions, from individuals whose summaries had made unsuitable remarks about "disability and sexual orientation."

Since Spotify Wrapped first appeared, the trend of providing yearly summaries has spread widely online, giving people insights into their reading, listening, and fitness activities over the year. Nowadays, some firms are leveraging artificial intelligence to either fully create or enhance the presentation of these statistics. For example, Spotify has introduced an AI-generated podcast that interprets your music listening patterns and predicts aspects of your life based on your musical preferences. Similarly, Fable jumped onto this bandwagon by employing OpenAI’s API to craft overviews of its users' reading habits over the last year. However, they did not anticipate that the AI would produce analyses that seemed to echo the sentiments of a critic skeptical of progressive values.

Subsequently, Fable expressed regret across multiple digital platforms, such as Threads and Instagram, sharing a clip where one of its executives offered an apology. In the accompanying text, the firm stated, "Our sincerest apologies for the distress our recent Reader Summaries have caused. We are committed to improving."

Before the article was published, Kimberly Marsh Allee, who oversees community engagement at Fable, shared with WIRED that the organization is in the process of implementing several updates to enhance its AI-generated summaries. These enhancements include a feature allowing users to decline the summaries if they wish and more transparent acknowledgments that the summaries are produced by AI. “Currently, we've eliminated the component of our algorithm that humorously criticizes users. Now, it just provides a straightforward summary of the user’s reading preferences,” she mentioned.

Following the release, Marsh Allee announced that Fable had opted to promptly eliminate the AI-generated summaries for 2024 readings, along with two additional AI-utilizing features.

For certain users, simply tweaking the AI doesn't seem sufficient. Fantasy and romance author A.R. Kaufer was shocked upon encountering screenshots of the summaries posted on social platforms. Kaufer believes a more drastic measure is necessary. "They should announce the complete discontinuation of the AI. Moreover, they owe a public apology, not just concerning the AI, but also to those who were harmed," Kaufer stated. She felt the so-called apology shared on Threads appeared disingenuous, criticizing the description of the app as 'playful', which she felt inappropriately downplayed the severity of the racist, sexist, and ableist content generated. As a consequence of these events, Kaufer chose to terminate her Fable account.

Similarly, Trammell expressed her opinion, stating, "The right move is to turn off the feature and undertake thorough in-house checks, adding new protective measures to guarantee, as much as possible, that no additional users of the platform face any risk," she mentioned.

Groves agrees, emphasizing that if the limitations of a small team make personalized reader summaries unfeasible, he prefers to do without them rather than risk the potential harm of unmoderated AI-generated content that could include sensitive or offensive language. He adds, “Those are my thoughts… provided that Fable is open to hearing the viewpoint of a gay, cisgender Black man.”

Generative artificial intelligence technologies have consistently encountered issues tied to racial biases. In 2022, a study revealed that OpenAI's Dall-E image creation tool disproportionately represented nonwhite individuals as "prisoners" and exclusively depicted white individuals as "CEOs." Moreover, WIRED uncovered that several AI search engines were promoting discredited and racially prejudiced beliefs asserting the genetic supremacy of white people over other races in the previous year.

Attempts at overcorrection have also led to problems. For example, Google's Gemini faced significant backlash for inaccurately representing individuals from the World War II era, specifically Nazis, as people of color in an effort to promote diversity. Groves comments, “Discovering that generative AI was behind those summaries didn’t shock me,” he notes. “Given that these systems are developed by coders who exist within a society filled with biases, it's natural that the AI would also reflect these biases, whether they are intentional or not.”

During the festive break, every editor except one from the editorial team at Elsevier’s Journal of Human Evolution (JHE) stepped down, expressing "deep sorrow and significant regret," as reported by Retraction Watch. This source also shared a digital version of the complete statement from the editors. According to Retraction Watch, this incident marks the twentieth collective departure from a scientific journal since 2023, prompted by disagreements over various issues, including contentious shifts in the commercial strategies employed by the scientific publishing sector.

"The members of the board expressed in their statement that making this decision was extraordinarily difficult for each of them. They highlighted that the editors who have managed the journal for the last 38 years have dedicated a significant amount of effort and time to establish JHE as the premier publication in the field of paleoanthropological research. These editors have shown unwavering dedication and loyalty to the journal and its contributors well beyond their official terms. The associate editors have demonstrated the same level of dedication and loyalty. We all hold the journal, our field, and our academic community in high regard; nevertheless, we feel that continuing our association with Elsevier is something we can no longer do with a clear conscience."

The editorial board highlighted multiple adjustments over the past decade that, in their view, deviate from the publication's traditional editorial guidelines. Among these were the decision to discontinue the roles of a copy editor and a special issues editor, thereby assigning their responsibilities to the editorial board. Upon raising concerns about the necessity of a copy editor, the board recounted Elsevier's stance, which was essentially that the editors ought not to focus on aspects such as language, grammar, clarity, uniformity, or the correctness of terminology and layout.

Additionally, proposals are in place to establish a third-level editorial committee that primarily serves a symbolic role, following Elsevier's move to assert complete dominance over the committee's framework in 2023. This came after the company mandated that all assistant editors must renew their agreements each year, a decision the committee views as a threat to its editorial autonomy and credibility.

Suboptimal Approaches

Elsevier has scaled back or delegated its in-house production processes and, in 2023, started employing artificial intelligence in its production workflow without notifying its governing board. This shift led to numerous issues with the style and formatting of documents, including the alteration of versions of papers that had been previously approved and prepared by the journal's editors. "This incident was a significant embarrassment for the publication, and resolving the issues took half a year, a feat accomplished only through the relentless dedication of the editorial team," the editors noted. Despite these challenges, the use of AI in processing submissions persists, often altering the intended meaning and layout of manuscripts, thereby necessitating significant intervention from authors and editors at the proofing stage.

Furthermore, the fees for author pages in JHE are considerably more expensive compared to those in Elsevier's other commercial journals, and also exceed the costs associated with widely accessible open access publications such as Scientific Reports. The editors pointed out that a majority of the journal's contributors struggle to meet these costs, a situation that contradicts the commitment to fairness and inclusion professed by both the journal and Elsevier.

The critical moment appeared to arrive in November, as Elsevier relayed to coeditors Mark Grabowski (of Liverpool John Moores University) and Andrea Taylor (from Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine) its decision to discontinue the dual-editor system that had been operational since 1986. Upon expressing their disagreement, Grabowski and Taylor were informed that the only way to maintain the existing model would be to accept a 50 percent reduction in their pay.

Elsevier, a publisher frequently criticized, including by Ars Technica's Chris Lee, has once again drawn ire with its recent actions. PZ Myers, a biologist from the University of Minnesota Morris, expressed his discontent on his blog, Pharyngula, stating, "Elsevier continues its trend of poorly managing its journals, prioritizing profit over quality." Myers highlighted Elsevier's move to replace human editors with artificial intelligence as a cost-cutting measure and their proposal to halve the editor-in-chief's salary. This is despite the fact that Elsevier imposes a $3,990 fee on authors for each manuscript they submit. Myers suggests that these actions are part of Elsevier's strategy to further enhance its profit-driven operations.

As of now, Elsevier has not replied to the comment request from Ars.

Every Use of AI is Not the Same

John Hawks, a University of Wisconsin–Madison anthropologist who has 17 JHE publications to his name, publicly backed the editorial board's stance on his personal blog. He was equally taken aback by the unexpected news, cited in a footnote, that Elsevier had incorporated AI into its editorial operations in 2023. "In the past two years, I've had four of my articles published in the journal, with one currently awaiting publication. I don't recall receiving any communication about the implementation of AI in the publication process, neither my coauthors nor I," he stated. He highlighted this as a breach of the journal's stated AI guidelines, emphasizing, "At the point of submission, authors deserve clarity on the application of AI to their submissions. Had I known my work might be subject to AI-induced alterations, I would have chosen a different publication outlet."

The deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research has raised significant alarm. Notably, a concerning example surfaced earlier in the year when a peer-reviewed study in the respected journal Frontiers included several AI-generated images that were shockingly inaccurate. These images became a topic of widespread amusement and disbelief on social media platforms, particularly one image depicting a rat with abnormally large and odd genitalia. Although the article was eventually withdrawn, this event has heightened fears that AI could compromise the credibility of scientific publications, despite its potential to enhance research efficiency.

Nevertheless, AI holds potential benefits for scientific research as well. For example, in January 2024, Science, a leading research publisher, declared that it would implement a commercial software across its journals to automate the identification of manipulated images. This tool might have identified the manipulated image of rat genitalia, but as John Timmer, the science editor at Ars, noted, the software is not foolproof. He mentioned, “It can detect the most blatant manipulations, but cunning deceivers who understand the software's workings can effortlessly evade detection.”

In a post on his blog, Hawks conceded that the adoption of artificial intelligence by researchers and academic publications is probably unavoidable, and he sees the possible advantages. "I'm not envisioning a dystopian future. However, the application of machine learning varies in its impact," he stated.

Utilizing AI to diminish or eliminate the involvement and supervision of human beings in scientific research—be it from researchers, editors, reviewers, or the audience—is detrimental. It's unwise for any organization to employ AI in a way that wastes the time of experts on unnecessary proofreading cycles or complicates the distribution of scientific findings. In this instance, Elsevier's intentions might have been positive, but they ended up achieving a combination of negative and foolish outcomes. The irony of them demanding openness from authors while failing to be transparent about their own methods is particularly frustrating. It would be advisable for authors of recent publications to ensure they have shared a preprint of their work to preserve the original version before AI intervention, as access for editors might be restricted, making it challenging or even impossible to correct published papers.

In this instance, it appears Elsevier's intentions might have been positive, yet they ended up achieving a combination of negative and foolish outcomes. It's particularly frustrating to see that while they insist on authors being transparent, they fail to offer any clarity regarding their own procedures. It would be highly advisable for authors of recently published articles to ensure they've uploaded a preprint version somewhere accessible. This way, the initial version of their work, before any AI involvement, remains available to the audience. As editors find themselves without access, making amendments to already published works could turn into a challenging, if not impossible, task.

In March, the journal Nature highlighted an article that scrutinized the effectiveness of mass resignations as a novel protest strategy, following the collective resignation of the editorial team at the Wiley-operated linguistics journal Syntax in February. This act of protest shares similarities with the grievances of the JHE editorial board. While these actions undeniably draw public attention, Klaus Abels, a former editor of Syntax from University College London, conveyed to Nature that the ultimate goal of such collective departures should transcend mere demonstration. He emphasized the importance of creating new, independent, nonprofit academic journals that are freely accessible and maintain rigorous scholarly standards.

Abels, along with his previous team members from Syntax, are currently undertaking a similar action, inspired by the actions of the ex-editors of Critical Public Health and another publication by Elsevier, NeuroImage, from the previous year.

Artificial intelligence is widely viewed as a danger to democratic systems and an advantage for authoritarian rulers. By the year 2025, it is anticipated that advanced computing methods will persist in eroding the quality of democratic discourse through the dissemination of anger, misinformation, and unfounded conspiracy claims. Furthermore, in 2025, these computing techniques are expected to further facilitate the establishment of comprehensive surveillance states, where the movements and activities of all citizens are monitored around the clock.

Crucially, AI enables the gathering of all data and authority into a single center. In the 20th century, decentralized information systems such as those in the USA proved more effective than centralized ones like in the USSR, due to the inability of human bureaucrats at the core to effectively process all the incoming data. However, substituting these bureaucrats with AI could potentially give an edge to centralized information systems akin to those used in the Soviet model.

This narrative originates from the 2025 edition of the WIRED World, our yearly overview of upcoming trends.

However, the rise of AI doesn't exclusively benefit autocratic leaders. One significant issue is the challenge of maintaining control. Dictatorships rely on fear to control populations, yet AI cannot be intimidated in the same way humans can. For instance, in Russia, the conflict in Ukraine is officially termed a “special military operation,” and labeling it as a “war” can lead to imprisonment for up to three years. If an AI on the Russian web were to refer to it as a “war” or discuss the alleged war crimes by Russian forces, how would the authorities manage to reprimand an AI? The state could attempt to shut down the AI or go after its creators, but that's notably harder than reining in human commentators. Furthermore, even state-sanctioned AIs could start expressing opposing opinions on their own, merely by identifying trends within the Russian media landscape. This illustrates the problem of ensuring AI alignment with government ideologies, seen here in the context of Russia. While Russian developers might strive to engineer AIs that fully support the state, the autonomous learning and evolving capabilities of AI pose a dilemma: how can they guarantee that an AI, which aligns with governmental policies in 2024, won't diverge into forbidden discussions in 2025?

The Constitution of Russia boldly claims to ensure “everyone shall have the right to freely express their thoughts and opinions” (Article 29.1) and asserts that “the suppression of expression (censorship) is not permitted” (29.5). However, few citizens of Russia would take these lofty assurances at face value. Yet, bots lack the capacity to discern nuanced language. A chatbot programmed to comply with Russian laws and cultural norms might interpret the constitution literally, believing freedom of expression to be a fundamental principle in Russia, and could potentially challenge the Putin administration for not upholding this principle. How then could Russian developers instruct the chatbot that, despite the constitutional promise of free speech, it should neither take the constitution at face value nor point out the discrepancy between what is proclaimed and the actual state of affairs?

Over time, dictatorships could encounter a more significant threat: rather than challenging these regimes, artificial intelligences might end up dominating them. Historically, the greatest peril to autocratic leaders often arose from within their own ranks. Neither Roman emperors nor Soviet leaders fell to democratic uprisings, but they constantly faced the risk of being ousted or manipulated by their closest allies. A tyrant who delegates excessive power to artificial intelligences in 2025 could find themselves under their control eventually.

Autocratic regimes are significantly more susceptible to being overtaken by algorithms compared to democratic systems. In a democracy with distributed power structures such as the United States, it would pose a considerable challenge for an AI with extreme manipulative capabilities to consolidate control. Even if such an AI could influence the President of the US, it would likely encounter resistance from various quarters including Congress, the Supreme Court, state leaders, the press, large businesses, and numerous non-governmental organizations. For instance, how would the AI navigate around the obstacle of a Senate filibuster? Gaining control in a centralized system is substantially simpler. To infiltrate a dictatorship, the AI would only need to sway a single, often distrustful, leader.
