Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin Move: Can He Propel Fernando Alonso to a Long-Awaited Third F1 Title?
Can Fernando Alonso secure his third F1 championship with the assistance of Adrian Newey?
The collaboration between Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey at Aston Martin raises championship aspirations.
Fernando Alonso will likely be thrilled to hear that Adrian Newey is joining Aston Martin.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Newey, who is often considered the best car designer in the history of Formula 1, will be moving to Aston Martin after leaving Red Bull in the spring of 2025. This announcement is a major declaration of ambition from the British team.
After Aston Martin emerged victorious in the competition among Red Bull’s adversaries to acquire Newey’s expertise, following the May announcement of his departure from Milton Keynes after nearly two decades, the 65-year-old will now have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow Formula 1 legend and double world champion Alonso.
Newey understands the challenges that await him. He's not joining an already successful team, and Aston Martin has significant progress to make before they can be leaders in Formula 1.
Following an impressive rise in 2023 that positioned Aston Martin as Red Bull's closest competitors coming out of the winter, the team from Silverstone has seen a decline in their standing within Formula 1 over the last year.
Alonso admitted prior to Newey's transfer being finalized that his joining the team would not lead to an immediate solution, even though Newey's impressive resume boasts 25 world championship titles (12 for drivers and 13 for constructors).
Alonso commented on the speculation about Newey joining the team at the Italian Grand Prix, stating that he believes it is not solely one person's responsibility to resolve issues.
"It's really about our current situation and ongoing efforts. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
This will significantly benefit Aston Martin, which has been actively hiring new talent following substantial financial investments.
Following the appointment of Dan Fallows from Red Bull as their technical director in April 2022, Aston Martin brought on board Andy Cowell, the former head of engines at Mercedes. Additionally, they recruited Enrico Cardile from Ferrari to serve as their new chief technical officer.
Starting in 2026, Aston Martin will end its relationship with Mercedes for F1 engines and will instead team up with Honda, transforming into a factory team.
Since 2019, Honda has been providing engines to Red Bull. After a challenging comeback to Formula 1 in 2015 with McLaren—a period that likely still troubles Alonso—the Japanese company now proudly holds the title of producing the top power unit in the sport.
As Aston Martin's cutting-edge factory and wind tunnel, which cost millions of pounds, near completion, Newey's addition is seen as the crucial element to transform the team into serious contenders for the world championship in the near future.
Fernando Alonso, the most senior driver currently competing in Formula 1, extended his contract with Aston Martin earlier this year, ensuring his presence on the team through at least the conclusion of the 2026 season, when he will be 45 years old.
The Spanish driver has expressed that he has no intention of retiring anytime soon and believes he is in the best shape of his life. The chance to drive Formula 1 cars engineered by Newey is likely to encourage Alonso to extend his career even further.
Martin Brundle mentioned to Sky Sports that it will require a period for Aston Martin to return to the lead, achieve frequent victories, and eventually compete for a championship title.
"By the time that happens, whether he remains swift enough or is even still present…"
"Yes, as long as Fernando is present when the magic takes place."
Following multiple failed attempts at career changes and coming close to winning championships, might Newey's brilliance be the key Alonso needs to break his ten-year drought and finally secure his long-desired third world title?
