Adrian Newey Reflects on Storied F1 Career Amid Speculation Over Future Moves
Adrian Newey talks about his F1 career amid ongoing speculation: "My dream since I was about 10 or 11 was to become a motor racing designer. Having accomplished that, everything beyond this point is just an extra."
Formula 1 design expert Adrian Newey has been reserved about his plans, acknowledging that any additional achievements would be a welcome extra when considering his future steps.
Adrian Newey stands as one of the most celebrated designers in sports history, achieving significant triumphs with teams like Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.
The 65-year-old is considered by many to be the top designer in Formula 1, a reputation supported by his remarkable resume.
Newey played a crucial role in Red Bull's achievements, especially in elevating them from a mid-tier team to regular championship contenders.
He is set to leave Red Bull in early 2025, although his plans following that remain uncertain.
Newey has been strongly associated with McLaren and Aston Martin, although Ferrari's interest in him is said to have waned.
According to F1, Newey admitted that he finds the attention and admiration he has been getting since the announcement of his departure from Red Bull to be "extremely flattering".
"Absolutely, it is. I must confess that I don't often read the news myself, but I do hear about it. My wife, Amanda, keeps up with it and gives me a general overview, so yes, it's very flattering, indeed."
"In the end, my motivation for the job isn't rooted in that. Ever since I was around 10 or 11 years old, my dream was to become a designer in the world of motor racing. I've been able to fulfill that dream, so anything beyond that is just an added perk."
"My true passion lies in enhancing the performance of cars, particularly racing cars. While other aspects are involved, they don't drive or inspire me as much."
After guiding McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen to a close call for the championship in 2005, Newey became part of the Red Bull team.
Looking back on the choice to depart from Woking, Newey recognized that many considered the move to be a "disastrous" one.
"It's truly been an incredible journey," he remarked. "I was with McLaren prior to joining Red Bull, where we had a great car in 2005 and secured 10 victories. However, I felt the need for a fresh challenge."
"Becoming a part of Red Bull was undoubtedly a significant gamble for my career; many believed it was a reckless decision."
"Honestly, the motivation was simply to strengthen the team with the aspiration that we might eventually secure a race victory. We could never have imagined or anticipated achieving the extraordinary success that we have experienced."
