Adrian Newey-Designed, Lewis Hamilton-Driven 2006 McLaren MP-4 21 Fetches Seven-Figure Sum at Sotheby’s Auction
McLaren designed by Adrian Newey and driven by Lewis Hamilton sold for a huge amount
This car, part of the legacy of both Adrian Newey and Lewis Hamilton, fetched a seven-figure sum at auction
A Formula 1 car from McLaren, dating back to 2006,
The MP-4 21, a vehicle crafted by Adrian Newey, was piloted by Lewis Hamilton.
According to Top Gear, Sotheby’s auctioned it on Friday, setting an estimated price range of £2.2 million to £2.7 million.
One of the earliest Formula 1 vehicles that Hamilton, at the age of 21, had the opportunity to test was the MP4-21.
It was crafted by the exceptional car designer Newey during his last year at McLaren.
Juan Pablo Montoya drove it during the initial three races of the 2006 Formula 1 season.
This was the inaugural McLaren to feature a 2.4-liter V-8 engine without turbocharging, produced by Mercedes-Benz and designated the FO108S.
This vehicle, identified as chassis 21A-03, has been refurbished to its operational standards. It still has its original engine, transmission, onboard computer, and steering wheel.
The uniqueness of this car being auctioned lies in the fact that it's uncommon to find an F1 car driven by Hamilton that isn't part of a factory collection.
One year afterward, in 2007, Hamilton secured his inaugural F1 championship. This MP-4 21 contributed modestly to his monumental achievement, serving as an initial test vehicle for the renowned racer.
The auction kicked off several days ago, which means that soon, someone with a few million dollars to spare will become the proud new owner of the McLaren MP-4 21.
