Italian Grand Prix F1 Driver Evaluations: Oscar Piastri Demonstrates Aggressiveness That Lando Norris Misses
Which drivers excelled at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix? Crash.net's driver evaluations.
Charles Leclerc – 10
Leclerc stood out as the star performer at Monza, showcasing exceptional skill. He expertly managed his tyre strategy, securing Ferrari's first victory on their home track since 2019.
Oscar Piastri – 9
Although he didn't secure pole position, Piastri demonstrated superior speed compared to his McLaren teammate during the race. His driving was both aggressive and incredibly fast. Piastri displayed qualities of a champion, showcasing a level of ruthlessness that his teammate might currently be missing.
Lando Norris – 8
Norris faced difficulties right from the start at Monza, once more demonstrating less than impressive racecraft as Piastri passed him at Turn 4. Oddly, Norris had more trouble managing his tyres, a skill he has been strong in over recent seasons. His rating was lowered due to a disappointing first lap and an error while he was ahead of Leclerc.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz consistently delivers reliable, if not electrifying, results for Ferrari. Despite having newer tires than Leclerc, he couldn't catch up to him in the final lap. Nevertheless, he contributed by slowing down Piastri during the Australian's late push.
Lewis Hamilton – 8
Hamilton faced ongoing difficulties in qualifying at Monza, being outperformed by Russell for the 12th instance in 2024. The seven-time world champion delivered an impressive performance on race day, maximizing the potential of the W15 with a clean and efficient drive.
Max Verstappen – 8
Verstappen did not meet expectations in qualifying, especially when comparing his Q2 and Q3 times. Nevertheless, Red Bull faced challenges throughout the weekend, so it was more about minimizing losses.
George Russell – 7.5
Russell delivered a remarkable performance during qualifying, but a mistake on the first turn of the initial lap led to damage and spoiled his race. Despite this setback, he managed to finish in seventh place.
Sergio Perez – 7
Perez had a pretty solid performance at the Italian Grand Prix, staying relatively close to his teammate Verstappen. With Red Bull having the fourth fastest car at Monza, it was expected that he would finish in eighth place.
Alex Albon – 8.5
Albon delivered an impressive performance over the weekend, securing a ninth-place finish in his Williams car. However, he expressed some dissatisfaction with the strategic decisions made by the team at Monza.
Kevin Magnussen – 7.5
Despite receiving a 10-second penalty that dropped him from ninth place and earning a race ban due to accumulating penalty points, Magnussen delivered one of his best performances of the season, ending the race within the top 10.
Fernando Alonso – 7.5
The performance of Aston Martin hit an unexpected new low at Monza. Alonso couldn't close the gap to within 10 seconds of Magnussen, preventing him from finishing in the top 10.
Franco Colapinto – 7
Colapinto had a strong first weekend, stepping in for Logan Sargeant at the last minute.
Daniel Ricciardo – 6.5
Ricciardo had a challenging weekend with no points expected for Red Bull. He received a penalty for forcing Hulkenberg off the track on the way to Ascari.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Despite facing challenges during the qualifying rounds, Ocon outperformed his teammate Gasly in the race.
Pierre Gasly – 6.5
Gasly faced several challenges during the race at Monza, including an incident with Magnussen for which he was not at fault. Nonetheless, Ocon seemed to have a better performance in the race.
Valtteri Bottas – 7
Bottas maintains a clear advantage over his Sauber teammate Zhou. Unfortunately, the car lacks the speed necessary to compete effectively in the midfield.
Nico Hulkenberg – 6
Following a strong performance in qualifying, Hulkenberg faced setbacks early in the race due to a collision with Ricciardo on the first lap. His race took a turn for the worse when he made an overly aggressive move on Tsunoda at Turn 1, resulting in a 10-second penalty.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou's real capabilities were overshadowed by a disorderly conclusion to the first qualifying session at Monza, which disrupted his last lap. Despite this, he remained inconspicuous during the race, with Sauber being clearly the slowest team.
Lance Stroll – 6
Stroll had a disappointing weekend and never looked like he would make it into the top 10.
Yuki Tsunoda – 5.5
Tsunoda was outperformed by Ricciardo in the qualifying session and had to retire early from the race after a collision with Hulkenberg.
