2024 Hungarian GP F1 Driver Ratings: Hamilton’s Masterclass and Piastri’s Maiden Victory Shine Bright
F1 Driver Ratings for Hungarian GP: Lewis Hamilton Shines with Outstanding Performance
Crash.net's evaluation of driver performances for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri – 9
Piastri delivered an excellent performance to secure his first-ever Formula 1 win. He was almost flawless until his initial pit stop. Although his performance dipped slightly towards the end, his overall victory was well-earned.
Lando Norris – 8.5
Norris experienced disappointment with another slow start on the first lap, initially falling to third place. During the first half of the race, Piastri outperformed him, but Norris demonstrated his skill in the latter stages. In the end, he adhered to McLaren's team orders, allowing Piastri to secure his first Formula 1 victory.
Lewis Hamilton – 9.5
Hamilton showcased exceptional skill once again at the Hungaroring. Despite Mercedes having, at best, the third-quickest car, Hamilton maximized its potential. His defensive maneuvers against Verstappen were outstanding.
Charles Leclerc – 8.5
Leclerc faced bad luck with the red flag timing in Q3, which resulted in him finishing sixth as he couldn't complete a second attempt. Nonetheless, he made an excellent start, positioning himself among the leaders. Throughout the race, he consistently outperformed his teammate Sainz.
Max Verstappen – 7.5
Verstappen had a rather untidy race this time. He made an uncommon mistake while dueling with Hamilton and displayed childish frustration over the team radio. It's understandable for any driver to have a bad day, but with McLaren gaining momentum, both Verstappen and Red Bull need to maintain their peak performance.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz performed admirably in the qualifying rounds, earning a spot in fourth position. However, a weak start caused him to fall behind Alonso. Despite this, he maintained a steady drive and finished in sixth place.
Sergio Perez – 6
Despite struggling in the qualifying rounds, Perez managed to secure a respectable seventh place finish on Sunday, surpassing Russell.
George Russell – Rating: 6
This was Russell's most challenging weekend of the season, as he was eliminated in the first qualifying session. He found himself trailing behind Bottas and later fell behind Perez due to strategic decisions. Overall, it was not a successful weekend for him.
Yuki Tsunoda – 8
Tsunoda had a strong weekend, effectively utilizing a one-stop strategy to secure a points finish. The only downside was his crash during qualifying, but it didn't significantly impact his starting spot.
Lance Stroll – 6.5
Stroll benefited from a strategic advantage that allowed him to surpass Alonso during the race in Hungary. He disregarded instructions from his team to maintain his lead and secure the last available point.
Fernando Alonso – 7
Alonso was visibly upset with Aston Martin's choice to bring him into the pits early. This strategy disadvantaged him compared to Stroll and Tsunoda.
Daniel Ricciardo – 7
Similar to Alonso, Ricciardo regretted the decision for an early pit stop and a two-stop strategy. Apart from that, he maintained a good pace and was competitive at the Hungaroring.
Nico Hulkenberg – 7
Hulkenberg initiated the sequence of early pit stops by pitting on the third lap. Unfortunately, Haas lacked the speed necessary to secure points, so the strategy didn’t pay off.
Alex Albon – 7
Scoring points was always going to be a challenge for Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite Albon’s disappointment in not reaching Q3 during qualifying, it was evident that Aston Martin and Red Bull had a significant advantage.
Kevin Magnussen – 6.5
This weekend, Magnussen lagged in speed compared to his teammate Hulkenberg.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
Sauber seemed to perform better thanks to several updates implemented this weekend, enabling Bottas to secure the 12th spot in qualifying.
Logan Sargeant – 6
Sargeant kept improving during the qualifying rounds, ending up just a tenth of a second behind Albon. However, he had a slow start and a late change to soft tires caused him to lose positions.
Esteban Ocon – 6.5
Alpine experienced a disappointing weekend. Their strategy to remain in the pit lane during a crucial point in qualifying severely hindered their performance. As expected, Ocon was unable to bounce back.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou struggled during the qualifying rounds and then delivered a performance that did not stand out during the race.
Pierre Gasly – 6
Gasly had to begin the race from the pit lane and had to retire early because of a hydraulic problem. It was a weekend he and the Alpine team would rather not remember.
