Yamaha Eyes Moto2 Star Alonso Lopez for Future Premier Class Promotion Amid Pramac Partnership Shake-Up
Yamaha shows interest in Moto2 talent for a new Pramac initiative
"We'll consider it when the time is right for him to advance to the top tier"
Yamaha has acknowledged their interest in Alonso Lopez, yet they have not confirmed if he will be advancing to MotoGP next year.
The Pramac satellite team, set to switch from Ducati to Yamaha in 2025, has resulted in two additional spots on the racing grid.
Several current MotoGP riders are keen on the extra Yamahas, and promising talents from Moto2 might also be in the running.
Yamaha's managing director, Lin Jarvis, was questioned about the possibility of Lopez being afforded an opportunity.
"Who can say?" he replied to Sky Italia.
“A few years back, we mentioned our interest in him as a rider.
“We are keeping track of his progress and, when the appropriate moment arrives for him to advance to the top tier, we can consider it.”
"We have just finalized the agreement with Pramac and are now focusing on young Moto2 riders for future prospects."
“But I’m uncertain if now is the appropriate moment to take them.”
As of now, Ducati's Fermin Aldeguer is the only confirmed newcomer for MotoGP next year.
Lopez, a 22-year-old from Spain, is competing in his fourth Moto2 season.
The Speed Up Racing team competitor is presently in fifth place in the Moto2 rankings.
Lopez secured victory at the first Moto2 grand prix of the season held in Qatar.
Despite garnering attention from the Yamaha MotoGP leadership, other top-tier riders are also eyeing the new bikes that have become available due to Pramac's choice to leave Ducati.
