Williams’ Mid-Season Dilemma: Exploring Potential Replacements for Logan Sargeant
Possible Mid-Season Replacements for Logan Sargeant at Williams
What are Williams' alternatives for substituting Logan Sargeant during the season?
Logan Sargeant's prospects for continuing in F1 shortly appear to be in doubt, as Williams is considering other options for the rest of the 2024 F1 campaign.
James Vowles' frustration with Sargeant has intensified, especially following his significant crash in the last practice session of the Dutch Grand Prix.
Should Williams opt for a change and move on from Sargeant, who might step into his role?
ESPN reports that Williams approached Red Bull to explore the possibility of borrowing Liam Lawson for the remainder of the season.
Lawson remains the third and reserve driver for Red Bull, as the team opted not to alter their driver roster or that of their sister team, VCARB, over the summer hiatus.
According to the report mentioned earlier, Vowles had a meeting with Christian Horner to talk about the possibility of acquiring Lawson.
At Zandvoort on Sunday, Horner conveyed to outlets including Crash.net that Red Bull is receptive to the concept.
Nonetheless, the fine print indicates that Red Bull might still consider keeping Lawson on standby this season, in case they decide to substitute Sergio Perez or Daniel Ricciardo.
Mick Schumacher is also being considered as a potential addition to the Williams team.
Schumacher was overlooked for an Alpine seat in 2025, with Jack Doohan being chosen instead for the upcoming season.
This situation results in the German having no clear pathway to return to Formula 1.
A brief period with Williams might be in the offing.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff is eager for Schumacher's comeback – and considering he's available, he stands out as the clear choice for Williams.
Nonetheless, Schumacher's history of significant crashes in his last season with Haas might deter Vowles from bringing him on board.
Should Schumacher excel at Williams, maybe Audi would consider betting on his talent down the line?
According to BBC Sport, Franco Colapinto is considered an unexpected candidate to take over Sargeant's position.
Colapinto is affiliated with Williams’ driving school and has displayed potential in FIA Formula 2 competitions.
The 21-year-old is currently in sixth place in the F2 rankings, holding a nine-point lead over Mercedes' rising star, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
According to a report by the BBC, Franco Colapinto, a racer in Formula 2 this year and a member of the Williams development program, has been discussed as a potential candidate, though he is seen as a long shot.
Felipe Drugovich, who clinched the F2 title in 2022, has previously been associated with the Williams racing team.
It was rumored that the Brazilian was considered for a position at Grove before Sargeant received the promotion.
Following his victory in the F2 championship, Drugovich has joined Aston Martin's training scheme.
Given his recent Formula 1 exposure and impressive performance history, Drugovich could be considered by Williams if Lawson or Schumacher are not options.
