Villeneuve Applauds Ricciardo’s P5 Qualifying at Canadian GP: A Needed Push to Silence Critics
Jacques Villeneuve shares his thoughts on Daniel Ricciardo's notable qualifying success, emphasizing the need for motivation.
Jacques Villeneuve has shared his thoughts on Daniel Ricciardo's outstanding qualifying round at the Canadian Grand Prix, humorously remarking that "he needs the motivation" following recent critiques.
Over the weekend, the Formula 1 world champion from 1997 voiced skepticism about Ricciardo's continued presence in Formula 1, challenging his recent lackluster performance and noting the absence of a clear route back to Red Bull for the Australian driver.
So far this season, Ricciardo has been outperformed by his Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda in every measurable aspect.
Nonetheless, Ricciardo experienced one of his finest performances of the current season, coming within a mere 0.2 seconds of the pole position, which landed him in fifth place on the starting grid.
After the qualifying round, Ricciardo addressed Villeneuve's remarks, saying: "I'm not exactly sure of his words. However, I've been informed he's been speaking negatively. Though, that’s typical of him.”
Villenueve subsequently shared his thoughts on Ricciardo's remarkable performance.
"As Christian mentioned, he requires motivation and stress for it to be effective. It proved successful," he explained.
"The performance is impressive. This weekend, the car really complements his driving style, allowing him to perform at his peak. This was an excellent qualifying round for him. If he manages to maintain this level of performance across the next five to six races, he'll be in a good position. As he mentioned, his main issue has been a lack of consistency throughout the year."
"He's had multiple opportunities. Throughout this challenging season, he's continued to receive chances. It's crucial for him to demonstrate his capabilities on the track. With today's successful qualifying, he must maintain this momentum."
Danica Patrick further stated, "What's truly important is performance. Besides that, he brings a lot to the table. He's got a vibrant personality, a positive energy, and he's excellent with sponsors. While all these aspects are significant, his actions on the track are what really count."
"He showed great integrity by stating his need to gather his thoughts and ensure clarity in his thinking."
"Occasionally, external factors can contribute to the problem. It essentially involves integrating these aspects as you age and possibly lose the singular concentration you had at 20."
