Verstappen’s Victory Veils Concerns: A Warning of Reliance Amid Red Bull’s Struggle with McLaren’s Pace
Max Verstappen raises concerns over Red Bull's performance compared to McLaren after the Spanish Grand Prix, cautioning, "you can't depend on it constantly."
Max Verstappen has acknowledged that McLaren's strong performance is somewhat worrisome, despite his victory at the F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
Verstappen secured his seventh win of the 2024 Formula 1 season, crossing the finish line slightly more than two seconds before Lando Norris.
In a recent showing, McLaren seemed to have the upper hand over Red Bull when it came to race speed, yet Verstappen's remarkable skill enabled him to maintain his lead over Norris.
Verstappen's skill in overtaking Norris and quickly getting past George Russell at the beginning essentially secured his victory in the race.
Nonetheless, despite his most recent victory, Verstappen remains wary of the ongoing challenge posed by McLaren.
"I'm really pleased because, in my view, securing the lead on the second lap was the key moment for us," he explained. "Essentially, getting in front of Lando right at the start, as it was during that initial segment that I built the gap to Lando, which ultimately led me to win the race."
"From the initial phase, my approach to the race was highly cautious. I opted for pit stops earlier than Lando. It was evident they had a slight edge today, with superior speed and tyre management."
"It was somewhat worrisome. It's not the kind of thing we prefer to witness, but as a team, we performed exceptionally well today. We made the most out of every resource available to us."
One could make the case that since their victory in China in April, Red Bull hasn't possessed the quickest car on the track during race days.
The partnership between Verstappen and Red Bull has demonstrated remarkable steadiness, frequently executing the correct strategic decisions despite not always having the fastest speed.
Verstappen has cautioned that Red Bull must enhance their performance because they cannot continue to depend solely on their superior operational capabilities.
"He expressed enthusiasm but emphasized a personal desire for enhanced performance, noting, "Currently, we're not leading in speed. That's the reason I'm striving relentlessly. My efforts in the initial phase placed us in a favorable position, as failing to overtake Lando at the beginning could have resulted in us finishing second today."
"Thin lines that determine the race's result. Up to now, we’ve managed everything smoothly, but it’s not something you can always count on. Ultimately, to clinch victories, you have to be the absolute quickest, and that’s what we’ve been missing in the recent races."
