Verstappen Sets the Record Straight on Post-Silverstone Crash Vision Issues
Max Verstappen explains the eyesight difficulty he encountered following his major collision with Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone.
Max Verstappen has provided an explanation regarding the issues with his sight after the significant collision with his Formula 1 championship competitor Lewis Hamilton during the 2021 British Grand Prix.
In an interview on Red Bull's official website, the athlete who has clinched the world championship title three times was inaccurately quoted stating that his vision was impacted by the 51G collision that occurred at the fast-paced Copse corner during the first lap of that particular year's Silverstone race.
The initial article, now removed, contained statements implying that Verstappen was continuing to face the health issue.
Nonetheless, Verstappen clarified to journalists, including those from Crash.net on Thursday before the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, that the situation is different.
"Verstappen mentioned, 'It only happened in '21. After that, it stopped. It did happen, though, back at that time.'"
In response to whether the incident was a direct result of the Silverstone crash that sent Verstappen to the hospital, he made a witty remark: "Well, it wasn't an issue before that, to put it mildly!"
Verstappen commented, “I wouldn't recommend people to do this while they are behind the wheel.
"As competitive drivers, we encounter a variety of challenges. Constantly moving from place to place, it's common for people to experience minor injuries or similar issues. Such incidents are part of the experience."
The Dutch driver disclosed that he shared the information with just a few team members, as he aimed to avoid showing any vulnerability during his intense, year-long competition with the seven-time world champion, Hamilton.
Verstappen remained reserved about the specifics but acknowledged that a solution to the issue had been identified.
"Fortunately, it was treated successfully," he mentioned. "I prefer not to delve into specifics; it's not necessary for anyone to be aware."
In the initial conversation, Verstappen detailed the challenges he faced while securing a close win against Hamilton at the United States Grand Prix.
"Verstappen exclaimed, 'It felt akin to maneuvering a speedboat at a pace of 300km/h!' He added, 'I've never expressed this previously, but there were moments during a few laps where the situation was so dire, I genuinely pondered shutting the vehicle down."
Focusing on my breath was the only solace, especially with Lewis closely behind me. It was a crucial victory that I absolutely had to secure in the championship battle.
