Oscar Piastri questioned regarding any friction with Lando Norris during McLaren's team order controversy
"It doesn't shock me that he wanted to stay in front during the race"
Oscar Piastri claims that a combination of McDonald's and Monopoly brought him closer to Lando Norris, but he emphasizes the need for talks on how McLaren will handle any future issues.
Last weekend in Hungary, Piastri secured his inaugural F1 grand prix victory after his teammate Norris adhered to team instructions and allowed him to pass.
Until Lap 48, Piastri was in the lead. However, due to varying pit stop strategies, Norris took over the lead and held onto it despite his team insisting that he relinquish it.
"I wasn't shocked since he's a race car driver securing a victory in an F1 race," Piastri commented at Spa before the upcoming F1 Belgian Grand Prix, where Crash.net is on-site.
"It's completely normal to want to take that step and seize every chance you get. Perhaps it lasted a bit longer than I had anticipated."
"We should also consider whether we might have had more chances to compete against each other if the situation had been handled differently."
"We have numerous discussions as a team, but it's impossible to prepare for every possible situation. This particular case had unique aspects that placed us in an unusual situation before the race."
"It's completely expected that he would want to maintain his position at the front of the race; it just makes sense."
Piastri discusses his dynamic with Norris
When questioned about whether McLaren believes they managed the controversy appropriately, Piastri responded, "It's a topic we still need to talk about further."
"I believe those were highly rational choices. We've definitely moved past that stage."
“It’s not certain that Max would have been a danger if he had overtaken Lewis and Charles. Lewis could have also been a potential threat if he had continued, which we observed with Max in the final moments.”
"I believe the choices made were quite prudent and were taken with full confidence in both Lando and me. I consider that aspect to be very reasonable."
"Naturally, it's somewhat different when you are competing for victories. There's always an aspect of not wanting to surrender, regardless of which side you are on."
"We might need to make some minor adjustments, but it's important to keep in mind that our main goal is to race for the team and aim for the constructors' championship."
Piastri explained the nature of his relationship with Norris, saying they haven't discussed the race in detail but have spent time together enjoying McDonald's and playing Monopoly.
"We remain in a positive relationship, maintaining the same level of understanding. Everything is fine, and there is still a great deal of mutual respect. The feeling is reciprocal. We're still in a good place."
Piastri asserts that McLaren has already established guidelines for future on-track battles between him and Norris.
He mentioned that they often talk about racing for the team and, although they haven't always been in a one-two situation, they have frequently found themselves near each other on the track, competing for podium positions and similar achievements.
"This particular situation was quite complex and perhaps we hadn't talked about it in detail, but I believe there's an understanding that we should compete intensely yet fairly, without any collisions."
"We always consider that key strategic choices, such as the timing of the second pit stop, are made with the team's objectives in focus."
"As I mentioned earlier, if it had been just the two of us competing without any concerns about the cars behind us, our pit stop strategy would have been entirely different. However, since we had to consider the other cars, we changed the order and then reverted it."
Will Norris assist Piastri again, if requested?
“I wouldn’t say he gave it to me; it’s more like he returned it to me,” Piastri emphasized.
"However, he eventually returned the position. I understand it's a tough situation to handle, particularly since everyone aims to come out on top."
"It might have taken a bit more time than I initially expected, but it eventually occurred. In the intensity of the race, it’s natural to focus on oneself, and I would have done the same. However, when driving for McLaren, we understand that decisions are made considering the team's best interests, and ultimately, we race for the team."
Will Piastri support Norris in his quest for the championship in upcoming grand prix races?
"Yes, I am aware that it's a possibility," he replied. "I definitely want to aim for the highest position I can achieve, but in the end, I race for McLaren and they have the final decision."
"I plan to score as many points as possible. Although it's still early in the season and I'm currently far behind in the drivers' standings, I'm not out of contention. It only takes a few races to catch up to where Lando is. Let's see how things unfold."
"If the team requires my support to assist Lando, I'll certainly be there for him. However, my primary focus is on earning as many points as possible for our team to secure the constructors' championship. That's our main goal, but we'll also keep an eye out for other opportunities."
