Surge to 1.1 Billion: Short Videos and Mobile Payments Drive China’s Internet User Growth in 2024
The number of internet users in China is approaching 1.1 billion, largely due to the popularity of short video applications and mobile transactions. According to a governmental survey, over one-third of new online users in China during the first six months of 2024 were attracted to short video apps.
The latest government data revealed that the number of internet users in China nearly reached 1.1 billion by the end of June, a rise of 7.42 million since December. This growth has been attributed to a wide array of online entertainment choices that have attracted both the younger and older generations, contributing to the biggest online community globally.
Approximately 78% of individuals residing in mainland China had internet access as of June, as stated in a report published on Thursday by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), a government entity. The report also indicated that over 37% of new internet users were attracted by short video applications.
The primary motivations for internet use in China were entertainment and social interaction. Around 95% of Chinese internet users had watched short videos, accessible on well-known platforms such as ByteDance's Douyin, its competitor Kuaishou, and Tencent Holdings' versatile application, WeChat.
Nearly half of the individuals who started using the internet in the first six months of this year were teenagers between 10 and 19 years old, making up 49% of the total. Additionally, 36% of new internet users were seniors aged 50 and above.
