**Summer Break Scorecard: Ranking MotoGP Manufacturers from 4/10 to 10/10**
'From 4 to 10 out of 10': Evaluating MotoGP Manufacturers at the Mid-Season Break
Scores out of 10 assigned to each MotoGP manufacturer as of the 2024 summer break.
As the summer break begins, the newest Crash.net MotoGP podcast evaluates and rates the performances of riders and constructors from the first part of the season.
Following a rating out of ten for each rider, which you can hear in the podcast linked above, host Jordan Moreland moved on to discussing the constructors.
"Ducati gets a perfect score of 10 from me. In my opinion, it's been an outstanding year for them. Just take a look at the rankings; they've been phenomenal. I believe the GP24 will be remembered as one of the best MotoGP bikes in history."
Aprilia. The rating was debated between 8 and 7.5. Ultimately, I settled on a 7.5 because I believe there's still untapped potential in the bike, and its performance remains inconsistent. Maverick has shown strong results, but the rest of the team has experienced a mix of highs and lows.
"I'd rate KTM a 7, largely due to Pedro Acosta. He has been a crucial asset for them. As for Yamaha, I'd give them a 6, maybe even a 6.5. They are showing progress and making good decisions for the upcoming year, which is encouraging."
Honda has been rated a 4, though bringing Aleix Espargaro on board is a positive step for the future. This move might improve their performance. While a 4 might seem somewhat severe, we'll have to wait and see how they perform in the latter part of the year.
"Pete, what are the five scores you received?"
"Ducati is almost perfect in my opinion. I'd rate it 9.8, only because Vinales won at COTA!" said Pete McLaren, a MotoGP editor. "There were minor chatter problems early on, but overall, its performance has been nearly flawless."
Aprilia. I would rate them an 8, as they have overtaken KTM to secure the second position in the constructors' standings. They've managed to achieve the consistency they previously struggled with. Vinales has secured race victories, and Aleix has won a Sprint. The 2024 bike has improved their braking capabilities, though they might have sacrificed some performance in high-speed turns.
"I would rate KTM at about a 7. They have seen a decline in performance for riders like Binder, Miller, and Augusto Fernandez. However, Acosta remains a standout performer for the team. Additionally, they have secured his contract for the future, and considering off-track factors, they also have talents like Bastianini and Vinales."
Taking that into consideration, I will also rate Yamaha a 7, but this is mainly due to their achievements outside of racing this year. For instance, they have managed to secure Quartararo's contract extension, acquired Pramac, and brought Max Bartolini on board.
At this point, Honda deserves a 6. Their development is ongoing, as they introduced significant modifications to their motorcycle for this year. The initial results at the Sepang test appeared encouraging.
"However, over time, the riders realized that this was not the correct path. We now have to wait until approximately September for the next round of upgrades, which might be Honda's final opportunity to turn around their performance this season."
Motorcycle racing journalist Rob Jones subsequently provided his ratings:
"Ducati has been outstanding, and I would rate them higher than a 10 if I could! Their performance has been phenomenal. Vinales did an excellent job securing his victory when he did because, looking ahead, I don't foresee many wins for other manufacturers for the remainder of the season, especially with Bagnaia and Martin competing for the championship."
"They possess the top-performing motorcycle in the GP24 and likely the second-best in the GP23 currently! They also have the talent to complement these machines, along with a substantial number of riders."
"Much like Pete, I would rate Aprilia an 8. They've demonstrated significant strength, and Vinales has clearly proven that."
"There might be a bit more potential left in that motorcycle. However, we must give significant credit to Ducati for their outstanding performance this year, and to Vinales for being able to compete with them on certain tracks. Overall, I would rate them as the unmistakable second-best team."
"I've felt somewhat let down by KTM this season, so I would give them a 6.5. As both of you mentioned, Acosta has significantly boosted that score. I believe he's been outstanding. However, I've been disappointed with the performance of the factory team and their accomplishments. This is the main reason behind my rating."
"I would assign Yamaha the same rating once more, but as you both mentioned, for varying reasons. The successes off the track include retaining Fabio, securing a deal with Pramac, and making evident progress. These are three crucial aspects where I believe they've excelled in 2024."
"So, in my opinion, Yamaha has made significant advancements, and I believe they will regularly compete within the top 10 next season."
"And then for Honda, just like you, Jordan, I'm going to rate them between 4 and 4.5. I understand they're making an effort, and given the scale of Honda, I believe they'll eventually succeed."
"It's been an incredibly challenging season. Every time there's a hint of optimism, it quickly gets dashed, and any progress made feels like it's immediately undone."
"Clearly, with Marc Marquez no longer in the picture, it's become evident just how much he masked underlying issues in recent seasons. For Honda, this is likely the most challenging time they've ever faced."
"I wish them success, and the year-end evaluations will be crucial for ensuring they begin 2025 on a strong note."
"Around a 4 to 4.5, but with the hope that they can make some enhancements."
