Sir Keir Starmer has disclosed that his greatest concern regarding the prospect of becoming prime minister is the effect it might have on his children.

During an interview with Beth Rigby on Sky News' Battle For Number 10 in Grimsby, the Labour leader expressed that his greatest concern was not the major decisions he faces, but rather the impact his role might have on his teenage children.

He mentioned that his kids, one almost 16 and the other 13, were going through challenging stages in their lives, implying that things might be simpler if they were either younger or older.

In a recent interview with Rigby, Rishi Sunak stood by his achievements in office, responding to inquiries regarding the commitments he made when he assumed the role of Prime Minister in January 2023, which were described as "broken promises."

The prime minister specifically addressed inquiries regarding the tax load, NHS queue times, and immigration, acknowledging that immigration levels were "excessive."

He acknowledged the public's "annoyance" but pointed out that the nation has endured "two unprecedented crises" – initially the COVID outbreak and subsequently Russia's assault on Ukraine.

"He argued that while there's a desire for positive transformation, real change requires a solid strategy and the willingness to take decisive actions."

The prime minister expressed immense enthusiasm about his daughters participating in national service, responding to an inquiry by William, a student from Grimsby. "I believe it will be revolutionary for our nation," he stated.

Regarding the topic of migration, he was questioned on his views about the reaction of Brexit supporters in Grimsby (where 70% voted to exit the EU) upon discovering that the total net migration over the past three years amounted to 1.9 million individuals.

He acknowledged that the figures were excessively elevated, yet he maintained that he had initiated efforts to reduce them since taking office as prime minister.

When questioned on why his statements should be trusted when previous leaders like David Cameron and Theresa May failed to reduce immigration as promised, he acknowledged the skepticism, noting, "I completely understand people's cynicism about this." He then pointed out that there has been a 10% decrease in immigration figures and a 25% reduction in the number of visas granted this year.

"What often leaves me restless at night are thoughts of my kids."

Sir Keir, anticipated by surveys to be the nation's forthcoming prime minister, expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity to transform the country, though he admitted concern for his teenage children's future.

"He expressed concern, noting, 'These are truly challenging times. My main worry is the effect this will have on them.'"

He explained that he had kept them out of the public eye and away from photo shoots to safeguard their privacy and allow them to lead independent lives.

"I'm not intimidated by major decisions; actually, I welcome the opportunity to transform our nation," he shared with Rigby.

"The one thing that truly frightens me, the sole concern that disturbs my sleep, is the well-being of my children."

"I'm looking to take a different approach"

Sir Keir, addressing the audience before Mr. Sunak, made efforts to set himself apart from former Labour leaders, stating his reluctance to use tax increases as a means to resolve the nation's financial issues.

He stated that his primary goal was to expand the economy and expressed his desire to take a novel approach.

Amid ongoing inquiries about his approach to taxation, Sir Keir asserted that there is "no necessity" for increasing taxes on "working individuals" in the upcoming party manifesto set for release this Thursday.

"Sir Keir acknowledged that past Labour leaders have consistently increased taxes and escalated spending."

"The declaration scheduled for tomorrow will outline a strategy for generating prosperity."

"It's not common to hear this from a Labour leader, but I believe it's the most crucial point."

Addressing the possibility of any tax increases in the upcoming parliamentary term, Sir Keir reiterated, "Our manifesto does not plan for tax hikes, and there will be no increase in income tax, national insurance, or VAT for working individuals."

Facing the crowd, Rigby chimed in: "Let me translate that for you all, because when a politician mentions 'no plans,' it actually suggests 'it's possible.'"

Embarrassing situations

Following his interaction with Rigby, Sir Keir addressed inquiries from the attendees regarding his strategies for addressing child poverty, improving housing, and reforming the NHS.

One person from the audience inquired if his time at the helm of the Crown Prosecussion Service (CPS) had transformed him into what seemed like a "political robot."

Following a brief moment of silence, Sir Keir responded, "A recurring motivation throughout my life has been the desire to serve the public, which is why I chose to enter the political arena."

Mr. Sunak was met with both laughter and jeers from those present when questioned about the five commitments he declared upon succeeding Boris Johnson as prime minister.

He was met with laughter when he claimed inflation "was always intended to decrease eventually," and the audience showed their annoyance when he attributed the failure to reduce NHS waiting lists, now at 7.54 million, to strikes.

When questioned about sharing some personal details to endear himself to the audience once more, he responded: "Many believe I lead a very wholesome life, regularly attending the gym and talking about my fasting routines, but in reality, my eating habits are terrible. I consume a lot of sugar, which is quite unhealthy."
