Sergio Perez Confident of Overcoming Recent Form Slump, Cites Differences from Last Year’s Struggles
Sergio Perez insists his current F1 performance issues are "different" from last year's downturn
Sergio Perez discusses his latest dip in form.
Sergio Perez is of the opinion that his current downturn in F1 performance is entirely distinct from the dip he experienced the previous year.
Following victories in two out of the first four races of 2023, Perez's performance significantly deteriorated.
The Mexican driver experienced a terrible streak in the qualifying rounds, not managing to reach Q3 in five straight races.
His decline in productivity aligned with his comeback to Europe – a scenario that has repeated itself this year.
Perez has emphasized that his recent challenges are not connected to the issues he encountered the previous year.
"Perez conveyed to the media, including Crash.net, that there's a notable difference," he said. "Our grasp on the car has significantly improved, and we're in a much better position now. Last year, our approach was to offset too many aspects through the set-up."
"We've definitely worsened the situation. I think now we're in a stronger position and have a clearer grasp of what's going on. However, the way problems have unfolded in the recent occurrences has unfortunately left us at a disadvantage."
Perez was forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix and was later penalized for re-entering the pit lane in a manner deemed unsafe.
The ex-Racing Point pilot disclosed that in the interval between competitions, Red Bull pinpointed "numerous problems" Perez was experiencing with the vehicle's configuration.
"Perez mentioned, "Indeed, following the weekend, we identified numerous problems that had arisen. It's a weekend we can essentially dismiss since it wasn't just a singular problem we faced. Initially, we believed it was only one problem, but upon further inspection, we found several more. Overall, it was simply a disappointing weekend, but we're now focusing on how we can improve from here."
Over the past several days, we've put in a lot of effort at the factory. We've managed to gain a solid grasp of the situation. In the realm of Formula 1, where the differences are incredibly minute, some elements haven't quite fallen into place as they should have.
"However, the silver lining is that, despite the pain of experiencing a series of disappointing races, it's refreshing to return and be here in Barcelona. Essentially… I'm aware that if I manage to perform well in a race, I can regain the momentum I recently lost."
After nine races, Perez is in fifth place in the drivers' standings, trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by 62 points.
