Renault to End F1 Engine Production by 2025, Alpine to Partner with Mercedes for New Era
Renault plans to end its F1 engine manufacturing for the Alpine team after the 2025 season, with Alpine transitioning to a customer role.
Renault has announced that it will end its Formula 1 engine program after the 2025 season.
The Alpine team, which is part of the French manufacturer and operates out of Enstone, is set to become a customer in 2026 and is anticipated to use Mercedes power units under the new F1 engine regulations.
The Viry-Chatillon site is set to become 'Alpine Hypertech', with an emphasis on the development of the company's electric motor technology and projects related to road cars.
According to a statement from Alpine, the company plans to convert the location into a hub for engineering and advanced technology by the end of 2024.
"Formula 1 operations at Viry, aside from creating a new engine, will carry on through the conclusion of the 2025 season."
Renault has been manufacturing engines for Formula 1 for the majority of the past fifty years, starting their involvement in the sport in 1977.
For months, there had been speculation that Renault might cease production of Formula 1 engines. The manufacturer has faced difficulties in keeping up with competitors Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda since the introduction of V6 hybrid power units in 2014.
"Establishing this Hypertech Alpine center is essential for Alpine's growth plan and, more generally, for the Group's overall innovation agenda," stated Alpine CEO Philippe Krief.
This marks a significant moment for the Viry-Châtillon site, guaranteeing the preservation of its unique expertise and integrating these rare skills into the Group's ambitious plans for the future. It also bolsters Alpine's role as a hub of innovation.
"The brand's foundation is deeply rooted in its racing heritage. This legacy will keep driving an extraordinary industrial and automotive initiative, mainly due to the advancements made by Hypertech Alpine."
