Remy Gardner Set for MotoGP Return: Yamaha Wild-Card Entry at Japanese Grand Prix
Remy Gardner is set to make a comeback as a wild-card entry in the Motegi MotoGP, riding a Yamaha M1 for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Remy Gardner is set to participate in his third MotoGP race of the season, competing as a Yamaha wild-card entry at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix next weekend.
The Australian rider is once again filling in for test rider Cal Crutchlow. Previously, he stood in for the injured factory rider Alex Rins at Sachsenring and later replaced Crutchlow during a wild-card appearance at Silverstone.
Gardner, currently a Yamaha rider in WorldSBK, is set to return to Motegi for the first time since he competed with Tech3 KTM in 2022.
Gardner expressed his enthusiasm about racing in Japan, noting that he has always enjoyed visiting the country for Grand Prix events. He added that competing in MotoGP for a Japanese manufacturer and in front of Japanese fans will be a unique and special experience for him.
"It's great that Yamaha has invited me to return after Sachsenring and Silverstone. They evidently believe I add value to the development program, so I'm optimistic that we can have a successful weekend at Motegi as well."
"It's going to be a hectic few weeks with five races lined up, but since I usually ride bikes nearly every weekend, it's not something out of the ordinary for me!"
Gardner placed 19th at Sachsenring and 18th at Silverstone, but Kazutoshi Seki, the leader of the Yamaha Factory Racing Test Team, highlighted that the primary focus is on developing the bike.
"Yamaha is focusing heavily on bike development this year," stated Seki. "Our engineers are putting in a lot of effort, and I firmly believe that this special entry will boost Yamaha's efforts to create new prototype components and enhance bike performance."
Remy Gardner has previously tested prototype components for the M1 twice this year, making him a sensible replacement while Cal Crutchlow is out with an injury.
Due to issues arising after surgery on his right arm, Crutchlow has been unable to participate, leading to Andrea Dovizioso stepping in for private test sessions.
Augusto Fernandez is being considered for a testing position with Yamaha in 2025.
