Comparison of Affordable Midsize SUVs: Dacia Bigster and MG HS
Both models are available for less than 30,000 euros…
The launch of the Dacia Bigster marked a significant shift. As the largest offering in the Romanian company's present lineup, it boasts quite distinctive features concerning its engines and market placement, making it quite a challenge to pinpoint its direct competition.
We have identified a primary competitor though: the MG HS. This vehicle was recently updated to include a plug-in hybrid option, which purportedly offers up to 100 kilometers of electric-only driving. Similar to the Bigster, the HS also boasts a comprehensive set of features at an impressively affordable starting price.
Exterior
Stretching to a length of 4.57 meters, the Dacia Bigster surpasses the Duster by a notable 25 centimeters. While it inherits distinctive design cues from the Duster, including the striking Y-shaped headlights and pronounced wheel arches that impart a rugged, off-road appearance, the Bigster nonetheless carves out a unique look and persona of its own.
The Romanian SUV is also distinguished by its matte black decorative elements and the intricately designed trim on the sides and rear. Skid plates at the front and back complete the package, while optional 19-inch wheels add a touch of elegance.
Dacia's Large-Scale
Model: MG
The latest iteration of the MG HS boasts a fully revamped exterior. It now measures 4.5 centimeters longer at 4.66 meters, while the roof has been lowered by approximately three centimeters to achieve a more streamlined and aerodynamic profile.
The front of the new MG HS stands out aesthetically, thanks to a generously sized radiator grille and sleek full-LED headlights.
At the rear, the predecessor's gentle curves have been swapped out for bold, sharp edges. The full LED lights now merge into a singular strip, and the rear bumper has been revamped to include a fresh exhaust design.
Inside the Dacia Bigster, the cabin prioritizes spaciousness and practicality. The front seats are designed to provide ample space and comfort from every angle, and the rear seats ensure plenty of legroom and headroom, making the vehicle well-suited for extended journeys.
The interior of the vehicle boasts a clean and organized design, featuring a dashboard notable for its Y-shaped inserts at the air conditioning vents. Standard on all Dacia models is a 10.1-inch touchscreen, along with seamless wireless support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The premium trims, Extreme and Journey, come equipped with the Media Nav Live System, offering connected navigation and map updates for a duration of eight years.

The vehicle's data is presented on colorful digital screens: a seven-inch display for the Essential and Expression models, and a ten-inch screen for the more advanced Extreme and Journey versions.
Furthermore, the Bigster comes equipped with the You-Clip system, first introduced in the Duster, which allows for the attachment of various accessories at key locations within the cabin, such as flashlights, coat hooks, or tablet mounts.
The Bigster's trunk space starts at a capacity of 667 liters, and the Easy Fold feature enables the rear seatbacks to be quickly folded down using levers located in the trunk. A rollable rubber mat that's easy to clean shields the cargo area floor, and this feature comes standard with the Extreme trim level.
The interior of the latest MG HS has undergone a full redesign with a focus on technological enhancements. The dashboard features twin 12.3-inch high-definition screens that provide easy control of all the vehicle's functions. This includes support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera system, and wireless smartphone charging capabilities.
In the top-tier model, the seating is crafted from leather and includes features such as electrical adjustments and heating capabilities. The cargo space has been expanded by 44 liters compared to the previous model, now offering a total volume of 507 liters.
Powertrains
The Bigster is equipped with a pair of gasoline engines, a gasoline mild hybrid system, a gasoline/LPG mild hybrid option, and a full hybrid variant.
Available for the Bigster model are the Hybrid 140 and the 140 ECO-G variants, both powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo mild-hybrid engine delivering 140 horsepower. The latter also comes with a dual-fuel gasoline/LPG system, which, thanks to a 49-liter LPG tank and a 50-liter gasoline tank, offers a combined driving range of up to 1,450 kilometers.
