Operational Issues Force Kazakhstan MotoGP Cancellation; Misano to Host Back-to-Back Races in 2024
Kazakhstan has been removed from the 2024 MotoGP schedule, with a second race in Misano taking its place.
The first-ever Kazakhstan MotoGP event, which had already been delayed from June to September, has now been officially called off. Instead, a second race will be held at Misano.
Sokol is now the third race to be removed from the MotoGP 2024 schedule, following Argentina and India. Initially, the Kazakhstan event was set to replace India on September 20-22.
A statement from the FIM, IRTA, and Dorna Sports indicated that operational and logistical challenges caused by previous flooding in the area have made it unfeasible to host the event in 2024.
However, the world championship will maintain a total of 20 rounds, with Misano hosting a second MotoGP event on the date originally scheduled for Kazakhstan.
The extra race at Misano will be referred to as the Emilia Romagna MotoGP, bringing back a name that was used for multiple events at the track during the Covid pandemic.
With the adjustment to the schedule, Misano is set to hold the San Marino MotoGP (round 13) from September 6th to 8th as initially scheduled, followed by an official test session on September 9th and then a weekend break. The newly added Emilia Romagna event (round 14) will subsequently occur from September 20th to 22nd.
The initial flyaway round kicks off in Indonesia, specifically in Mandalika, only five days afterward.
The Balaton Park Circuit in Hungary was unexpectedly named as a 'Reserve Event' for the 2024 MotoGP season, but it seems it was never considered as a replacement for any canceled races.
