Mercedes’ Resurgence: A New Era of Dominance in F1 as Hamilton and Russell Outshine Rivals
Mercedes heralded as a formidable contender as F1 season continues
Mercedes praised for achieving three victories in four races, reviving past glory
Mercedes' morale has been boosted following their triumph in three races prior to the summer hiatus, serving as a caution to their competitors.
George Russell's victory in Austria, followed by Lewis Hamilton securing his first win at Silverstone in three years and then clinching another victory at Spa, has resulted in Mercedes triumphing in three out of the last four Grand Prix races.
Max Verstappen, who once led the pack for Red Bull, hasn't secured a win in the last four races, a concerning trend for the frontrunner in the championship.
Russell initially finished ahead, securing a first and second place finish for Mercedes at the Belgian Grand Prix, but a subsequent disqualification resulted in his teammate Hamilton being awarded the win.
"Friday was a tough day for them," remarked Stoffel Vandoorne, the reserve driver for Aston Martin, on the F1 Nation podcast.
Observing Lewis' season, it's evident he frequently encounters challenges on Fridays, attributed to his preference for tweaking the vehicle's settings and experimenting with its features.
He gains insight into the operation of the systems, and by Sunday, his focus is fully sharpened.
"He is aware of the car at his disposal and manages accordingly. His performance on race day has consistently outshone his qualifying results, despite them being quite impressive as well."
"He's an outstanding driver who has an excellent sense of how to handle the tyres. Similarly, George did an exceptional job in managing them and ultimately took the lead, finishing first."
"The outcome was unexpected for Mercedes."
Tom Kristensen, who has clinched victory at Le Mans nine times, commented, "The team has regained its confidence. After nearly two years, they've finally emerged from the paddock."
"This resulted in a first and second place finish, although it's not officially recognized. They aimed to secure the top two positions. The scenario in Austria varied, with an incident involving Max and Lando that opened up possibilities."
At Silverstone, Lewis emerged victorious, but had Lando employed a more effective strategy, the outcome might have favored him instead of Lewis.
"At Spa, they emerged victorious. They managed to qualify under rainy conditions. They executed every strategic move possible."
Russell's third win in Formula 1 was nearly jeopardized when it was found his vehicle was under the required weight limit by the FIA. Nonetheless, he's proving to be the guiding force Mercedes needs as Hamilton prepares to join Ferrari the following year.
"Vandoorne acknowledged that George, having secured victories in all the junior series, clearly possesses a lot of skill."
"During his time with Williams, he exhibited remarkable speed in qualifying rounds, spanning over a few years."
Even at that time, Mercedes recognized his incredible pace, his raw speed. They also noticed his exceptional skill in tire management.
"He inherently possesses the skill to effectively handle the tyres."
He joined Mercedes, where the stakes are significantly higher. He's now alongside Hamilton, the driver who shattered all the records.
"He's remained resilient and has shown strong performance in qualifications. Despite experiencing setbacks – like the accident in Singapore – he's showing signs of growth. Week after week, he continues to deliver solid results."
Kristensen commented on Hamilton's showing in Belgium, stating, "Undoubtedly, he performed admirably. He had hoped for a different approach to the race."
"He felt let down on the victory stand, but now he's claimed the grand prix title. The context is significant for any racer."
