In a discreet move this past April, luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz brought an electric prototype of their CLA-Class to the renowned Nardo testing circuit. Their goal was to determine the distance the vehicle could cover in a day. Impressively, the car clocked 2,309 miles within 24 hours, creating a new benchmark.

The team, working on a secret initiative referred to as Project N—where N represents Nardo—focused on modifying nearly finished electric CLA models with the goal of breaking a record. The former record of 2,128 miles was established by Porsche in 2019 using a Taycan.

The accomplishment required a total of 40 stops to recharge, with each stop taking roughly 10 minutes. Mercedes states that the 2026 CLA is capable of gaining 186 miles, which is approximately 36 kwh, for its 85-kwh battery within a 10-minute charge, starting from a battery level of 10%. The company mentioned that a 10-minute charge should be able to replenish the battery to 50%.

The quick charging feature is made possible thanks to the CLA's 800-volt electrical system, which is similar to the one found in the Taycan.

The electric CLA that broke records began its journey with a full battery, and the team adjusted the charging approach on the fly, considering the air temperature and elements like wind. They also had to factor in the fixed position of the charging station on the circuit, which meant the pit stops were scheduled, resulting in the car being charged at varying levels of battery life each time.

Mercedes indicated that the surrounding air temperature varied, with nighttime lows at around 55.4 degrees and daytime highs reaching approximately 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the evaluation, the vehicle maintained a mean velocity of 96.2 miles per hour, hitting a peak velocity of 130 miles per hour at one point in the process.

The group was made up of six individuals who took turns driving the CLA EV, which was equipped with rear-wheel drive. Power was supplied to the back tires by a 200-kw motor that was always in sync, producing 268 horsepower. Mercedes noted that the vehicle's 2-speed automatic gearbox played a role in enhancing its fuel economy.

The Porsche Taycan may not be the leading electric vehicle in terms of efficiency; that title goes to the Lucid Air, which boasts a 5.0 mi/kWh efficiency rating. However, the Taycan has a reputation for surpassing its official EPA range estimates in actual driving conditions. This impressive performance might be partly due to its dual-speed transmission and higher cruising gear ratio. If the final model outperforms the Air – as Mercedes suggests its prototype will – we could see a new champion in efficiency by the time the 2026 CLA EV rolls out towards the end of 2025.

Research Indicates: Electric Vehicle Battery Costs Expected to Halve by 2026

The cost of batteries for electric vehicles has been on a downward trajectory, with predictions of a further significant decrease by 2026, as per a recent analysis by Goldman Sachs.

According to the findings, the worldwide average cost of batteries on a pack basis saw a reduction from $153 per kilowatt-hour in 2022 to $149 in 2023. The report forecasts a further decrease to $80 per kilowatt-hour by 2026, marking a nearly 50% drop from the 2023 figures. This is the threshold at which experts believe electric vehicles will be on equal pricing terms with their gasoline-powered counterparts.

Experts believe the consistent drop in battery costs is due to a couple of key reasons. Firstly, progress in technology, particularly the development of bigger battery cells and cell-to-pack technology, has reduced or even removed the need for numerous battery modules. This not only has the potential to cut down expenses but also to increase energy density by up to 30%, which experts think could maintain battery-pack dimensions. Tesla has started creating its own big 4680 cells, yet has encountered challenges in reducing the production expenses of these cells.

Another element influencing the situation is the decrease in the cost of essential materials such as lithium and cobalt. These materials were responsible for the spike in electric vehicle battery prices in 2022; however, their prices are on a downward trajectory, which is expected to persist until 2030 or beyond. This drop is projected to account for around 40% of the forecasted decrease in battery costs, as per insights from Goldman Sachs.

Tesla seems to have ceased offering the vinyl wrap choice for its Cybertruck model. The option is no longer visible within the company's digital accessories store, its former location.

Canada's Drive Tesla was the initial observer of the vanished Cybertruck wrap choice, highlighting that this move followed Tesla's trim down of its color offerings from 11 to a mere three. Tesla did not officially declare this adjustment, and in contrast to other car manufacturers, it lacks a dedicated PR department to reach out to for further details.

Tesla is still providing vinyl wraps for its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. However, the unique flat and angled design of the Cybertruck makes it an ideal vehicle for these wraps, as mentioned by Drive Tesla. Applying these wraps could also serve as additional protection for the Cybertruck's stainless steel exterior.

As of the month of September, customers could only choose from three colors: Satin Rose Gold, Satin Stealth Black, and Satin Ceramic White. The price for these options reached as high as $6,500, which is pricier than third-party alternatives, as pointed out by Drive Tesla. Moreover, the Drive Tesla report mentioned that Tesla limited installations to just three of its service centers, all located in California.

This issue could lead to an abrupt loss of power in the wheels, necessitating the exchange of the inverters that may be defective.

This latest iteration has seen updates in styling and powertrains, with a focus on incorporating new technologies. These changes are aimed at keeping pace with European regulations and rivals.

Competition is dwindling in the A-segment as the number of models shrinks. However, the Kia Picanto remains in the game. This small car from Korea recently underwent a significant design overhaul. Now, it's time to see how they measure up in a head-to-head comparison.

Style and Size

The Fiat Panda maintained its size and shape during its most recent update, stretching to a length of 3.65 meters. Standard models come equipped with 14-inch steel wheels, but the high-end version, the Pandina, is mounted on 16-inch alloy wheels and features LED daytime running lights.

Compared to its rivals, the Kia Picanto is six centimeters shorter, measuring 3.59 meters, and features a more intricate design that takes cues from its larger siblings. The front end is more assertive than the previous model, boasting a tiger-nose shaped grille that pairs perfectly with the available LED headlights.

At the rear, the lines are vertical and crisp. Similar to the regular Panda, it has 14-inch wheels, but these are made of alloy rather than steel, and with the higher trim levels, the wheel size can go up to 16 inches.

Interior

The updates to the revamped Fiat Panda's interior primarily enhance the more comprehensive trims, with the entry-level model remaining notably basic and among the rare vehicles without a central display. However, digital instrumentation is now available. To acquire this feature, one must opt for the Pandina variant, which comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Regarding the seating capacity, the entry-level Panda can accommodate four individuals, while the more generously equipped variant has room for five passengers. Both options feature a single-piece, foldable back seat, which is a definite limitation in terms of flexibility. Given its exterior dimensions, the trunk doesn't perform miracles in terms of space, yet it isn't excessively stingy either. It offers a minimum volume of 225 liters that can expand to 870 liters with the back seats folded down.

The cabin of the Kia Picanto boasts significantly enhanced features, most notably the standard 8-inch touchscreen that takes center stage on the dashboard, accompanied by a digital cluster with a 4.2-inch display. It also comes equipped with the expected Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as multiple USB ports for added convenience.

The space available is, of course, not overly generous. However, there's no shortage of centimeters in terms of height and length. The trunk is average for its class, with a capacity of at least 255 liters, which can be expanded to over 1,000 liters by folding down the rear seatbacks in a 60:40 split.

Powertrains

The engine selection for the Fiat Panda is streamlined to the essentials, featuring solely the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder mild hybrid engine delivering 70 horsepower. This unit is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The Fiat Panda 4×4 has, in reality, been off the market for quite some time.

In contrast, the Kia Picanto presents a more diverse range of engine options. Prospective buyers have the choice between a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine or a dual-fuel gasoline/LPG engine that delivers 63 horsepower, both available with either manual or automatic transmission. Alternatively, there's the option of a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine producing 79 horsepower, which too comes with the choice of manual or automatic transmission.

Pricing

Currently, in our local market, pricing for the Fiat Panda kicks off at €14,990 for the entry-level model, with the more feature-packed and rugged-looking Pandina reminiscent of the old Cross, commanding a price of €18,290. On the other hand, the Kia Picanto's pricing starts at €16,690 for the 1.0 Edition 7 trim and goes up to €22,190 for the top-tier GT-line featuring a 1.2-liter petrol engine paired with an automatic transmission.

At the core of what the manufacturer boasts as a versatile and adaptable vehicle framework is the so-called skateboard chassis. This foundation is primarily designed for electric vehicles and includes all the necessary drive and chassis components. However, the structure that sits atop this base, namely the body of the car, is subject to change. Mercedes is envisioning a new entry-level lineup with a total of four models. This includes the CLA four-door sedan, a shooting brake, and two types of SUVs.

Mercedes adopts a drive layout familiar from its mid and top-range models, featuring rear-wheel drive for optimal traction and handling, into its entry-level models. The engineering team at Mercedes-Benz has independently developed a powerful 200 kW electric motor with a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) situated at the rear axle.

The all-wheel drive 4matic models are equipped with an additional front axle Drive-Unit that generates 80 kW of power. For enhanced efficiency, it also includes a cutting-edge inverter made with silicon carbide (SiC) technology and operates as a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM). The front electric motor acts as an auxiliary boost during acceleration. There is talk that these models could reach distances up to 750 kilometers and have the capability to charge 300 kilometers worth of power in just ten minutes.

Vehicles built on the MMA platform will be available with a hybrid system featuring 48-volt technology. The electric motor, which provides a drive power of 20 kW, has been incorporated along with the inverter into a newly developed electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT). A newly designed 48-volt battery using lithium-ion technology and constructed in a flatpack design supplies up to 1.3 kWh of electrical energy.

Through the use of recovery systems and the capability to operate solely on electric power at urban speeds, this powertrain achieves remarkable efficiency. This is further enhanced by the ability to coast on electric power at speeds of up to approximately 100 km/h. A new four-cylinder gasoline engine from the modular FAME (Family of Modular Engines) series is utilized for the combustion engine component. Initially, the hybrid power system will be offered in three power levels of 100, 120, or 140 kW.

Not so long ago, an electric vehicle that could cover 300 miles on a single charge was considered a significant achievement. Today, with the gradual emergence of widespread charging stations and the development of quick charging solutions, several modern electric vehicles are offering a driving range of up to 500 miles.

In 2016, electric vehicles reached a milestone of 300-mile range with the introduction of the Tesla Model S. Since that breakthrough, the momentum has only grown. This is despite the slow progress in developing widespread rapid-charging networks, and the expansion of electric vehicle usage beyond the sunny states of California and the southern "smile" region, which has raised issues about battery performance in colder climates.

A new wave of electric vehicles has emerged, with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ratings exceeding 350 miles, and a few surpassing 400 miles. In 2023, the average range was 270 miles, and it's anticipated to reach the 300-mile mark before long.

It's evident that trucks dominate this compilation. For example, among the eight automobiles exceeding 350 miles according to EPA standards, three are hefty pickup trucks. Rivian's R1S and R1T, both equipped with expansive Max Pack batteries, surpass the 400-mile mark. And there's more to come. The all-electric Ram 1500 REV, expected to launch at the start of the following year, targets a 500-mile range with its premium model featuring an enormous 229-kwh battery pack.

This upgrade is predicted by GM to enable the vehicle to achieve an EPA-cycle range of 381 miles, or 359 miles if you opt for the Extreme Off-Road Package. However, these figures aren't official since the hefty battery size pushes the Hummer into the same weight class as medium-duty commercial trucks.

Every electric vehicle boasting a range of over 300 miles isn't necessarily high-priced, with several exceptional models making their mark. Take the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV, for example, which offers a 319-mile range. GM has begun rolling out units starting at an entry-level price of $34,995.

For the compilation of this list, we focused exclusively on vehicles with official range and efficiency evaluations from the EPA, as noted on the agency's FuelEconomy.gov website as of November 4, 2024. However, we made allowances for models currently in the delivery process, such as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD. Where feasible, we included vehicles from the 2025 model year, as well as select 2024 models still on the market, ensuring we avoided any repetitions.

Similarly, to prevent redundancy, we're only mentioning the highest-end version for each series. It's worth mentioning, for example, that the full range of Lucid Air models achieves over 350 miles.

Set to debut in the following year, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA will spearhead the launch of four fresh models, including three destined for the American market, all built on the brand-new MMA platform dedicated to electric vehicles. Equipped with dual charging ports, the ability to support high-powered rapid charging, a sophisticated electrical system, motors crafted internally, a dual-speed gearbox, and an option for a hybrid powertrain, this vehicle marks the beginning of Mercedes' soon-to-expand adaptable range.

The vehicle's electric system is made future-ready with a newly developed 800-volt system crafted internally by Mercedes. Crucially, the car can regain around 186 miles worth of battery life in a mere 10 minutes, starting from a 10% battery level. This equates to a 36 kWh energy replenishment in that time frame. Mercedes also claims that charging the battery from 10% to 80% will take under 22 minutes.

Charging at home can be done using a built-in 11.0-kW charger, which should be able to fully charge the American version of the car, with its 85.0-kWh battery capacity, in about eight hours overnight.

Sources close to Mercedes have disclosed that the upcoming U.S. release of the CLA model will feature a unique dual charging system. Concealed behind a solitary charging flap, users will find both a CCS connector and a NACS connector, the latter being compatible with Tesla charging stations.

The company claims that the decision was made in the interest of the consumer, as it eliminates the worry of misplacing or damaging an adapter. The powertrain and chassis modules displayed featured solely a CCS port, with no images available of both charging ports in a comparative view.

Silicon carbide inverters are included in both motor setups.

The CLA is set to debut as Mercedes' initial electric vehicle to incorporate a dual-speed gearbox. However, this model won't be the only one; professionals foresee that the majority of Mercedes' forthcoming electric vehicles will also adopt this more intricate system to enhance performance and energy conservation.

Mercedes' technical team acknowledges that the current dual-mode regenerative braking system used in both the EQS models needs significant improvement.

The mixed martial arts platform, particularly the latest CLA model, incorporates Mercedes' advanced regenerative braking technology. Although it continues to be a dual-stage blended mechanism, developers assert that its functionality is distinct from the current system found in the EQS.

The vehicle will employ regenerative braking as its primary method until it becomes too slow or the required conditions are not met (such as the battery being overly charged, or extreme temperatures). Mercedes states that the car is capable of recuperating energy up to 200 kilowatts.

In contrast to what happens in the EQS and EQE models, during regenerative braking, the brake pedal in this vehicle will remain stationary and not actuate by itself.

Vehicles will feature single-pedal operation through one of the four regenerative braking intensities known as D- (single-pedal mode), D, D+ (minimal regenerative braking), and D Auto. Designers have indicated that the vehicle will retain the chosen regen brake mode after the engine is turned off and will remain unchanged until the driver manually adjusts it, which differs from current vehicles.

For the base model CLA in various international markets, a 58.0-kilowatt-hour (usable) LFP battery unit is provided. The American version of the CLA will be equipped with the default 85.0-kilowatt-hour (usable) battery pack made of nickel manganese cobalt (NMC). According to the engineers, this represents 96% of the battery's total capacity, which is actually 88.5 kilowatt-hours.

Each set utilizes prism-shaped batteries instead of the pouch or cylindrical varieties. The design team opted for this configuration to optimize space, size, and structural integrity. The latest formulation incorporates silicon within the anode to enhance the capacity for storing energy.

Future AMG vehicles will feature a unique battery pack designed specifically for their use.

All aspects of battery software and its incorporation into systems have been created internally and will maintain this internal development approach. A board member of Mercedes Group AG and the company's CTO, Markus Shäfer, emphasized the importance of complete vertical integration for the company's advancement. It's essential that the physical components and digital elements operate in unison. This is the reason Mercedes has appointed a Chief Software Officer to its executive team for the first time ever.

The setup can perform charging in two directions, suitable for use in household (Vehicle-to-Home) and electrical grid (Vehicle-to-Grid) scenarios.

From the outset, there is a noticeable design oversight. The MMA platform was initially designed exclusively for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), but a hybrid engine was integrated during the development phase. As a result, the positioning of the front electric motor is compromised by the space requirements of the hybrid's combustion engine. Consequently, the electric motor is positioned higher than necessary. This will result in the CLA featuring a front trunk with a storage capacity limited to roughly the size of a small briefcase.

Power is stored in a 1.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery situated under the driver's seat, and the system operates on a 48-volt setup.

Scioletti informed the press, as reported by the Australian outlet Drive, that "over 90% of Ferrari's total production [exceeding 300,000 vehicles] is still in use." He added, "Pre-owned vehicles frequently serve as the initial introduction to our brand for many new clients. This is why we've created multiple initiatives to maintain the longevity of these vehicles."

It doesn't come as a shock to us. Ferrari has numerous schemes for its brand-new and pre-owned vehicles to ensure their roadworthiness. The car manufacturer provides a warranty with unlimited mileage for nearly all its new high-performance sports cars and even supplies new parts for its vintage models.

Scioletti pointed out that numerous owners are introduced to the brand via the Ferrari Approved program, which essentially restores pre-owned models to their original factory condition. The company then provides a warranty that can last up to 24 months for vehicles that are up to 16 years of age.

This impressive 90 percent survival rate is one of the highest among car brands. It is estimated that over 80 percent of Toyota cars sold over 20 years ago are still being driven globally.
