Mercedes and Red Bull Step In with Replacement Offers for Williams’ Sargeant Ahead of Italian GP
Mercedes and Red Bull propose alternatives for Logan Sargeant in jeopardy at Williams, as reported by Connor McDonagh from Zandvoort.
Williams might see Mick Schumacher or Liam Lawson behind the wheel at the Italian Grand Prix, as Mercedes and Red Bull have proposed both drivers as potential substitutes for Logan Sargeant.
Sargeant's immediate future in Formula 1 is said to be at risk after his significant crash during the final practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix.
His accident during the third free practice session caused substantial damage, significantly impacting Williams' annual budget and affecting the rollout of their latest upgrades.
Consequently, James Vowles, the team principal at Williams, is contemplating a mid-season change for Sargeant.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was considered a potential candidate to prepare him for his anticipated Formula 1 debut next year with Mercedes. However, Wolff dismissed this idea on Sunday in Zandvoort.
Kimi Antonelli set to pilot Mercedes during Monza's first practice session, yet dismissed from potential transfer to Williams.
Wolff and Horner have indicated that Schumacher and Lawson, respectively, possess recent Formula 1 experience and are open to opportunities.
In a conversation with Crash.net and other media outlets, Wolff expressed his desire for Schumacher to have another opportunity in Formula 1, stating, "we haven't yet witnessed the true Mick."
"He expressed a strong desire for Mick to get the opportunity, as he believes Mick's true capabilities have yet to be showcased."
"If you've succeeded in F4, F3, and F2, but haven't shown results in F1… I believe he's earned an opportunity. Should that chance come with Williams, it's something we would definitely support. However, the final decision rests with James Vowles."
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull Racing, is willing to consider loaning Lawson to another team to provide him with another chance to compete in Formula 1.
Currently serving as Red Bull's reserve driver, Lawson is anticipating a chance to join VCARB in the 2025 season.
"Horner mentioned to the press, including Crash.net, at Zandvoort that it all hinges on the conditions and the possibility of swiftly reacquiring him if necessary."
"Of course, if they require a driver for the upcoming weekend, we'd be willing to consider it. However, that's more of a question for Williams than it is for us."
