McLaren has taken the lead as the initial Formula 1 team to reveal their contender for the 2025 season, conducting a preliminary test run at Silverstone.
The MCL39 hit the track for the first time at the venue of the British Grand Prix on Thursday, as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took turns behind the wheel during a promotional video shoot organized by McLaren.
McLaren's latest race car was unveiled featuring an eye-catching geometric camouflage pattern. This design was introduced in anticipation of the Formula 1 season kickoff happening next week at the O2 Arena in London.
On Tuesday, at an unprecedented joint F1 season kickoff, all ten teams are set to unveil their official paint schemes for the upcoming season.
McLaren embarks on the season aiming to retain their title as the world champions in the constructors' category, a feat they achieved last season for the first time in 26 years.
"Today marks a significant moment in our quest for the 2025 championship," stated McLaren CEO Zak Brown. "It's fantastic to see our contender for the championship, the MCL39, hit the track for its inaugural run, showcasing the result of our team's relentless effort.
It's important to understand that each team will have advanced during the offseason. The previous season clearly demonstrated the narrowing gap among the competitors, which is fantastic for the sport.
"We are confident that we've advanced beyond our achievements with the championship-winning MCL38, but the true test of our progress will be during the Qualifying rounds in Australia, where we'll see how we stack up against the competition."

Andrea Stella, the team principal of McLaren, expressed enthusiasm about witnessing the debut of the MCL39 on the Silverstone Circuit track today.

Key Issue for Each MotoGP Manufacturer to Address Post-2025 Preseason Trials
We examine the crucial insights and improvement areas for each of the five MotoGP factories following the preseason testing sessions.
The annual MotoGP testing sessions have concluded, leaving all five manufacturers with both optimistic takeaways and aspects that require enhancement.
These are the main challenges that each manufacturer must address following five days of official testing, with just two weeks remaining before the inaugural race in Thailand.
Ducati – Introducing Flawlessness
Currently, the challenges faced by Ducati in MotoGP are all of a high-end nature.
They need to handle the dynamics between what could be considered the two top riders globally right now. Their toughest rivals frequently belong to teams using the same equipment but are not part of the official factory team. Additionally, they face the challenge of developing a motorcycle that surpasses what is considered the greatest bike ever made.
This might exaggerate the capabilities of the GP24 a bit, but securing victory in 16 out of 20 races last year demonstrates that the previous Desmosedici model is undoubtedly among the top motorcycles ever seen on a Grand Prix starting line.
Naturally, this raises the year-end question of how it can be improved.
It appears that the situation might be more complex than even the engineers at Borgo Panigale anticipated. As a result, Ducati's official riders, Francesco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez, and Fabio Di Giannantonio, will be competing in Thailand in a few weeks equipped with a 2024 engine, 2024 chassis, and 2024 aerodynamics.
There have been a few minor changes, but the major components that were thought to be part of the GP25 will not be used in races this year. This includes the engine, which will not be raced at all, and the rest of the parts won't be seen in the early races either.
Certainly, relying on the Desmosedici GP24 showcases Ducati's power, not its shortcomings. The fact that it could even consider using it again highlights just how exceptional the bike was—and continues to be.
Despite this, an issue remains: the beginning.
In the latter half of last year, both Bagnaia and 2024 champion Jorge Martin had moments where they didn't perform exceptionally well, and it appears that they still haven't completely hit their stride for 2025 either.
The reason for this might be Ducati's use of a hybrid bike that primarily features elements from the 2024 model, with some minor upgrades from the 2025 version. As a result, it may require some fine-tuning to ensure the engine, clutch, electronics, and rider work together seamlessly for consistently strong starts.
However, if the sole issue lies in the starts, it isn't a catastrophe, even in today's MotoGP era.

Aprilia – Battling Through Injuries
The preseason for Aprilia's MotoGP did not begin well as Jorge Martin and Raul Fernandez, who are crucial for Aprilia's development due to Martin's skill, speed, and experience, and Fernandez's familiarity with the RS-GP, both sustained injuries on the first day of testing at Sepang.
Fernandez managed to come back for the Buriram test, while Martin had to miss it. As a result, Marco Bezzecchi took on a significant portion of the development tasks this winter.
Before this winter, Bezzecchi, who seemed quite laid-back, wasn't really seen as a potential test rider. However, reports from Aprilia, especially comments from the factory team's manager, Paolo Bonora, indicate that he actually performed quite well in the role.
Significantly, the advice from Aprilia's management is supported by the lap times, as Bezzecchi finished the Buriram test in third place, trailing just the Ducati riders, Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez.
The question of whether Bezzecchi will continue to spearhead Aprilia's efforts once Martin returns for the first round is something that only time will reveal. Undoubtedly, Martin will need a period of adjustment, which ideally should have occurred during the offseason.
Aprilia's preseason initially appeared to be a failure on the opening day. However, it was salvaged by a rider who, by the conclusion of 2024, became the subject of debate about his qualifications for securing the factory position from the start.
KTM – Vibration Issues Persist
While Ducati is starting the 2025 season with a package similar to what they finished with in 2024, KTM is facing the upcoming season with the same challenges it encountered last year.
Last year, numerous KTM riders frequently mentioned that vibration was one of the biggest challenges with the RC16, and this issue has persisted into 2025 without resolution.
Currently, KTM is not primarily worried about rear vibration issues, but if this continues or if the company in Mattighofen cannot figure out a method to increase speed and compete with the Ducatis, they may soon face the challenge of retaining Pedro Acosta, who was their quickest rider in Buriram by a margin of 0.6 seconds.
Yamaha – Struggling with Traction and Optimism?
Yamaha stood out more than any other company during the test sessions. Their performance was so impressive in Sepang that both Francesco Bagnaia and Davide Tardozzi hinted that the brand from Iwata might be the nearest competitor to the Bologna-based company by 2025.
In contrast, Buriram served as a reality check, highlighting that Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha's quickest competitor, was nearly 0.2 seconds behind Joan Mir, the top-performing Honda rider.
Despite the ongoing grip problems, Yamaha has shown advancement over the winter. These issues need to be addressed, as they currently cause the YZR-M1 to be somewhat unpredictable. However, it appears that Yamaha is starting to see positive outcomes from the organizational adjustments it started making in 2023.
Will they secure the championship title? Unlikely. However, could they achieve victory in a single race? That seems plausible—though not in Thailand, but potentially elsewhere.
Honda – Motor Company
Honda's situation resembles Yamaha's in the lead-up to this season. Although there appear to be advancements, the company is not yet a serious contender for podium finishes or victories.
At Sepang, the RC213V riders didn't have much success, but the situation improved significantly in Thailand. This positive change could be partially attributed to a recent private test in Buriram carried out by Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami.
Joan Mir ranked sixth in terms of speed overall, with his top time exceeding his 2024 Q2 best by more than 0.6 seconds, marking his fastest performance of the weekend at that event.
What is currently hindering Honda's progress? It's the engine.
It's no longer surprising to hear people express disbelief that Honda Motor Company struggles to produce a reliable engine. This issue has been central to the challenges faced by the RC213V for at least the past five years. Yet, it's still quite striking that Honda's bike is slower on the straights compared to even Yamaha's inline-four engine, which, despite being ill-suited, has won multiple titles.
Horsepower and torque aren't the sole factors here, as rear traction poses a challenge, impacting acceleration as well.
Despite the fact that Honda is expected to continue facing challenges with its straight-line speed for some time, it appears that numerous other problems with the motorcycle have been addressed.
Due to the engine's sluggish performance and lack of traction at the rear, the focus is primarily on the bike's front end. Improvements here are enhancing the bike's turning capabilities and boosting the riders' confidence.
Mir expressed that he might actually find some enjoyment in riding the bike at Buriram. This is a sentiment that has likely been rare for him since he became a part of HRC in 2023, following his 2020 World Championship victory.
The same rider mentioned that he feels "concerned" about race conditions due to the bike's lack of speed.
The pressing question now is whether Honda can introduce more power without sacrificing the handling enhancements it achieved over the winter.

Aprilia achieves significant advancements in the 2025 preseason trials
The current MotoGP title holder's team, Ducati, has chosen to continue using the GP24 engine from the previous year for their official riders. Meanwhile, Aprilia has been highlighted for making significant advancements in engine development.
Last year, Aprilia was the sole manufacturer besides Ducati to secure wins in races, achieving this feat in one Grand Prix and three Sprint events, with former riders Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro leading the charge.
The year got off to a terrible start as both Jorge Martin, the newly signed superstar, and Raul Fernandez from Trackhouse sustained injuries on the first day at Sepang.
However, another new face in the factory, Marco Bezzecchi, boosted Aprilia's spirits by climbing from ninth place in Sepang to third in the final test held in Buriram this week. During this event, he also emerged as the quickest rider among those who attempted a Sprint simulation.
During the two-day event in Thailand, Aprilia was also vying for the highest position in a different category: top speed.
On the first day, Bezzecchi's RS-GP tied for second place in speed, reaching a top velocity of 336.4 km/h. This put the Italian rider just 1.1 km/h slower than Pedro Acosta's KTM.
On the morning of the second day, Acosta and Bezzecchi matched those speeds. By the end of the test, two Aprilia riders, Bezzecchi and test rider Lorenzo Savadori, both recorded speeds of 336.4 km/h, tying for second place behind Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who reached 338.5 km/h.
Savadori, who has taken over some of Martin's responsibilities for testing, expressed satisfaction by stating that the engine for 2025 is significantly improved over the 2024 model.
The Italian mentioned that the engine had improved in every aspect, "including its performance on the straight."
Bezzecchi concurred, stating that the bike performs competitively and the 2025 engine is effective in all conditions.
Martin is planning to make a comeback for the season's first event, the Thai Grand Prix, which kicks off with practice sessions in Buriram on February 28.

In an exclusive interview with Crash.net, Williams team principal James Vowles shared his thoughts at the F1 2025 Silverstone season launch event.
Today, Williams became the second team to officially unveil their Formula 1 car for the 2025 season.
At the Silverstone event, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon took turns driving the FW47, while members of the media and invited guests were present.
In an exclusive conversation with team principal James Vowles, Crash.net aimed to uncover more details regarding Sainz's insights following his drive. The discussion also touched upon whether Sainz's feedback was consistent with Albon's analysis and what knowledge Sainz might share with Williams based on his time at Ferrari.
"It's not merely about increasing downforce; it's more about achieving the right balance, which is something he particularly seeks, and we've already mastered that," Vowles explained to Crash.net.
He was also interested in other aspects of the car, such as enhancing the starting process, improving the overall feel while driving, and optimizing how well he fits and functions within the vehicle.
Carlos Sainz has joined the team now called 'Atlassian Williams Racing,' bringing with him a wealth of experience and a strong reputation as one of the most esteemed drivers in Formula 1.
With only four race victories to his name, it doesn't fully reflect the dependable performance and steady speed he has shown during his Formula 1 career, which has included stints with Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and currently Williams.
The head of Williams provided more details on Sainz's comments, stating: "Sainz expressed satisfaction with certain elements, such as the stability during braking. However, he identified balance, particularly in high-speed corners, as an area for improvement. Fortunately, we're already moving in the right direction. Additionally, the car's feel as the tires wear down is another aspect we're looking at."
In interviews following races last year, drivers like Albon, Logan Sargeant, and Franco Colapino frequently discussed problems with the car's general drivability and how it reacted to wind. However, the team's standout performances showed that their car could compete effectively with the midfield when it was performing optimally. The main challenge is expanding that optimal performance range.
In conclusion, and possibly most interestingly, when asked about the importance of Sainz’s hidden technical insights from Ferrari and how beneficial they could be to CTO Pat Fry and the design team at the Grove headquarters, Vowles firmly stated that the team's car problems need to be addressed from within.
In his statement, Vowles expressed that if Sainz were to present anything, he would simply discard and eliminate it, emphasizing that everything must remain within the organization—and indeed, it is!
The FW47 is set to make its debut on the track during the official pre-season testing in Bahrain from February 26 to 28. It will then compete in its first race at the opening event of the season, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, scheduled for March 16.

Review of the last day of the 2025 Official Buriram MotoGP test, taking place on Thursday.
Thursday marked the conclusion of the pre-season MotoGP trials for 2025, held in Buriram, Thailand, starting in the morning.
In his debut with Ducati, Marc Marquez secured the top spot, outpacing his younger sibling, Alex, by 0.465 seconds on the initial day. During this time, the Bologna-based manufacturer announced it is considering continuing with the GP24 engine for its factory-spec GP25s for the current season.
Alex has consistently topped the speed charts at the GP24 during the recent tests in Barcelona and Sepang, aiming to secure a perfect record of first-place finishes in the winter tests for Gresini today.
On Wednesday, Franco Morbidelli of the VR46 team secured a spot in the top three for Ducati, followed by Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, KTM’s Pedro Acosta, and the Honda riders Luca Marini and Johann Zarco.
Jack Miller led the Yamaha team, finishing tenth, as the Japanese manufacturer had a more modest beginning in Buriram, unlike its standout performance in Sepang.
This week, Aprilia's current MotoGP titleholder, Jorge Martin, and VR46's Fabio di Giannantonio are missing due to injuries sustained at Sepang. Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez, who underwent surgery following an early accident in Malaysia, has returned to race for Trackhouse.
The examination period is scheduled from 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening, followed by the initial practice session for the Thai Grand Prix, set to commence on February 28.
End-of-Day Standings – Buriram MotoGP Trials, Second Day (Thursday)
Enea Bastianini matches the performance of his Tech3 teammate, Vinales, by recording his fastest lap of the session. At the conclusion of a challenging pre-season, Bastianini secures the 15th position, adding to his accolades as a Ducati race victor.
With just five minutes left of pre-season testing, five riders are still out on the circuit: Fabio Quartararo, Raul Fernandez, Luca Marini, Enea Bastianini, and Miguel Oliveira.
Maverick Vinales has made significant advancements, securing the 9th spot on the aggregated timesheets with his Tech3 KTM.
In the meantime, Honda's Joan Mir has had an impressive end to the afternoon, showcasing remarkable speed in his Sprint simulation where he finished just behind Bezzecchi, and similarly, he ranks just after the Aprilia rider in the Session 2 leaderboard.
In the aggregate timings for the day, Mir ranks 6th, trailing Marc Marquez by 0.544 seconds.
Previously showcasing his skills in the Sprint simulation, Marco Bezzecchi has advanced to third position in the rankings, trailing the frontrunner Marc Marquez by 0.205 seconds.

Update from Alex Marquez reveals he encountered "several issues" during his race simulation but chose to continue, which accounts for the significant (0.7 seconds per lap) difference from his brother Marc.
Alex faced challenges with the temperature and pressure of the front tire, alongside an electronic problem related to human error.

As we near 5pm, there haven't been any significant updates in the fastest lap times (with Fabio Quartararo moving up to 7th place), but we expect to see additional data on longer runs soon.
Highlights from the racing simulations include Marc Marquez impressing with his blazing speed and steady performance across a Grand Prix distance of 23 laps, Marco Bezzecchi leading the way with the quickest Sprint time, and an unexpectedly strong Sprint performance from Joan Mir.

Alex has consistently achieved the top speed on the GP24 during the prior two trials, both in Barcelona and Sepang, and aims to secure a flawless record of winter first-place finishes for Gresini today.
On Wednesday, Franco Morbidelli from the VR46 team secured a position in the top three dominated by Ducati riders, followed by Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, Pedro Acosta from KTM, and Honda riders Luca Marini and Johann Zarco.
Jack Miller emerged as the leading Yamaha rider, finishing tenth, as the Japanese team had a more modest opening in Buriram, following their strong performance in Sepang.
This week, Aprilia's current MotoGP champion Jorge Martin and VR46 team member Fabio di Giannantonio are missing due to injuries sustained at Sepang. Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez, who underwent surgery following a crash on the first day in Malaysia, returns to race for Trackhouse.

Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia has acknowledged feeling consistently anxious about the MotoGP pre-season testing for 2025, a sentiment that existed prior to Jorge Martin's accident, primarily because he was uncertain of his approach.
Before the 2025 pre-season, the racer who had clinched three Grand Prix victories had never been an official team rider, instead competing on Ducati bikes from the previous year with the VR46 Racing team.
Aprilia's preparations for the upcoming season hit a major snag right at the outset of the Sepang test, as the current world champion, Jorge Martin, was involved in a severe accident. This mishap led to numerous fractures, sidelining him until the Thai Grand Prix at the earliest.
Marco Bezzecchi steps up at Aprilia
As a newcomer to the initiative, Bezzecchi has led the way in testing the 2025 RS-GP, making a notable impact.
He finished the Sepang trial among the top 10 and recorded Aprilia's quickest lap ever at Buriram on the second day of the Thailand trial.
Bezzecchi mentioned that Aprilia's confidence in him significantly eased his anxiety, especially since he had concerns regarding his new venture.

Bezzecchi commended the front-end performance of the RS-GP, expressing satisfaction with how he's adjusting to the motorcycle. However, he mentioned difficulties in getting the most out of new tyres during qualifying sessions, even though his remarkable lap at Buriram made headlines.
"Frankly, I've been feeling positive since Montmelo," he mentioned, alluding to the test in Barcelona after the season ended last November.
"Obviously, the adjustment period has been lengthy and I believe there are still aspects of the riding that I'm continuing to adapt to."

Carlos Sainz has been favorably impressed by Williams as he gets ready for his first Formula 1 season with the team.
Star acquisition Sainz was the initial Williams driver to take the new 2025 car for a spin, after it was unveiled at Silverstone last Friday.
The driver, who has secured four grand prix victories, has transitioned from Ferrari after being replaced to accommodate the incoming seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
Even though not much can be learned from these initial runs due to F1 testing limitations and unusual track conditions, Sainz found the experience immediately promising.
Carlos Sainz described his initial experience with the FW47 as "honestly positive" during a discussion with reporters, among them Crash.net, after his first drive of the vehicle.
"The most significant aspect of this event is that it highlights Williams' advancement. The team's confidence is evident as they organize a test in front of all their key partners and the media, showcasing the car's inaugural laps. This demonstrates Williams' faith in their upgraded equipment, ensuring the vehicle performs smoothly, as was evident today without any problems."
"It's a positive indication and a strong message to the outside world, reflecting the advancements Williams aims to achieve. I'm pleased with how the first day went."
In the post-season test at Abu Dhabi in December, Sainz had the chance to try out Williams' 2024 car and expressed that he was pleasantly surprised by the vehicle's performance.
He stated that first impressions hold significant weight as you only get a single opportunity to make one, and in this case, it was a favorable one.
During my time in Abu Dhabi, I discovered a car that exceeded my initial expectations to some extent. While it did have some shortcomings when compared to the vehicles I am accustomed to driving, the difference wasn't significantly large.
"The midfield teams have significantly closed the gap with the leading teams. This was evident during the first qualifying session in Abu Dhabi, where our times were separated by just half a second. When you consider that margin over an entire lap, it comes down to sensing a difference of about a hundredth of a second in each corner. You need to be highly skilled to detect such subtle differences."
The speaker expressed definite feelings and noted that they observed the team to be highly motivated and energetic. This was particularly impressive considering the challenges of completing a triple-header and the Abu Dhabi test, after which people typically just want to head home.
"The enthusiasm I witnessed on that day, along with our ability to flawlessly adhere to and carry out our strategy, was significant to me. This test was crucial and I believe it will be beneficial as we prepare for Bahrain."
Sainz was reluctant to share his predictions for the upcoming season at such an early point.
He urged, "Let me at least have the Bahrain test to evaluate." He emphasized that the competition among the midfield teams will be extremely close. He pointed out that even if you make a seven-tenths improvement, it doesn't make a difference if your competitors also make the same progress, as you'll still find yourself in the same position on the grid.
"I require some time to evaluate the situation of everyone in Bahrain before determining our strategy for Australia. A crucial aspect for me is maintaining the positive momentum and continued progress that Williams is experiencing."
"We are witnessing advancements across the board, and it's crucial to maintain this momentum and continue capitalizing on it. In my view, sustaining this progress is key, as I believe the significant opportunity for Williams will arise in 2026 rather than 2025."

Ducati faced a dilemma regarding the engine for 2024 or 2025
Ducati's team leader, Davide Tardozzi, has announced that the team's primary racers will compete using the 2024 model engine for the upcoming two MotoGP seasons.
Throughout the pre-season, Ducati has shown impressive form, yet there remains uncertainty regarding which engine they will choose to compete with in 2025.
The GP24, having already proven itself by securing victories in 16 out of 20 grand prix races last year, sets a high benchmark. Therefore, the GP25 engine must represent a significant advancement, especially in light of the two-year engine freeze that starts this season.
During the Buriram testing session on Wednesday, Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia acknowledged the competitiveness of the 2025 engine, although Marquez pointed out it possesses certain significant shortcomings.
Facing a significant risk in committing to an engine for two years that it lacks confidence in, Ducati has decided that Marquez, Bagnaia, and VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio will compete using the 2024 engine.
"Tardozzi confirmed that the decision has been made, and the engine to be used for the 2025 and 2026 seasons will be the one from 2024."

From MotoGP to Baggers: Loris Baz Joins Indian’s Wrecking Crew for 2025 MotoAmerica Season

Ex-MotoGP competitor secures spot in unique U.S. racing series
The 2025 season of MotoAmerica's King of the Baggers series is set to feature another prominent racer.
Ex-MotoGP competitor Loris Baz is set to compete for the official Indian team in the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers series this year.
The French rider, who returned to the United States last year after being excluded from BMW's WorldSBK lineup for 2024 due to their signing of Toprak Razgatlioglu, is set to embark on his third season in the MotoAmerica series. This year, he will transition from the Superbike category he competed in last year to the King of the Baggers series, and will switch his allegiance from Ducati to Indian.
In the concluding round of last year's MotoAmerica Superbike series in New Jersey, Baz clinched his maiden victory by narrowly defeating former Moto2 competitor Sean Dylan Kelly with a margin of 0.151 seconds. The thrilling race concluded with the top five racers finishing within a second of each other.
After not extending his contract with the HSBK Ducati team for this season, Baz has secured a position with the Indian Motorcycle's "Wrecking Crew" of factory racers. He joins the team alongside defending champion Troy Herfoss, who is also a new recruit, and former champion Tyler O’Hara, all competing on the 1,768cc Indian Challenger.
Baz expressed his admiration for the King of the Baggers series since its inception and shared his excitement about joining the esteemed Indian Motorcycle Wrecking Crew, describing it as a genuine privilege.
"I have personally witnessed the achievements of Troy Herfoss and Tyler O’Hara on the S&S Indian Challenger in Superbike racing. I am excited to become part of this championship team, and together we aim to secure another title in 2025."
In recent years, the King of the Baggers series has gained international popularity. This surge in interest is attributed to its distinctive motorcycles, which stand out compared to the typical race track bikes. The series also features renowned riders like Jeremy McWilliams and offers thrilling races at venues such as Daytona, where the slipstream effect on the banked oval parts of the track keeps competitors tightly grouped.
