Marc Marquez Champions David Alonso’s Rise: Urges Patience and Praises the Moto3 World Champion’s Talent and Character
Marc Marquez insists on a 'pressure-free' environment for 'remarkable champion' David Alonso
"David has completely won me over"
Marc Marquez has expressed deep admiration for the newly crowned Moto3 world champion, David Alonso. However, he has cautioned MotoGP against burdening him with excessive expectations, advocating instead for giving him space to develop.
The young Colombian racing sensation, at just 18 years of age, burst onto the grand prix scene as a formidable newcomer following his debut Moto3 season last year. During this impressive rookie season, he clinched four victories, propelling him to third place in the overall standings.
This season, Alonso has emerged as the top contender in Moto3 with the Aspar team, securing victories in 10 out of the 16 grand prix events held to date. He clinched the world championship title last weekend in Japan, achieving this feat with four races still remaining in the season.
Marquez has consistently shown strong support for Alonso in recent times, and recently commended the Moto3 titleholder once more. Alonso is set to move up to Moto2 next season, joining the Aspar team.
"Marquez expressed deep affection for David, particularly admiring his quickness and exceptional talent."
"Yet, he remains grounded and possesses a magnetic charm. Thus, in my opinion, he has the potential to be – and I'm inclined to believe he indeed will become, should I place a wager – an exceptional champion. He's already achieved greatness, but he's poised to surpass his current achievements in the future."
"Now is the moment to savor it; the child requires some time."
"In the coming year, he's bound to make a few errors in Moto2, but let's not weigh him down with too much pressure since he's extremely young."
"I have aspirations and desires for him to reach the pinnacle of success in MotoGP."
Earlier this year, after a track day in Spain, Marquez referred to Alonso as a "sponge" because of his knack for absorbing feedback and putting it into practice.
Two-time MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia has shared insights into Alonso's diligent approach to improving his skills as a motorcycle racer.
"Bagnaia mentioned that Alonso was inquiring about his breakfast choices following Alonso's victory in the world championship."
In Aragon, he inquired about what I had consumed prior to the race.
"Today, while it was Sunday in Japan, he inquired about what I was having for breakfast."
"Therefore, it appears he's retaining all these aspects [mentally], which isn't something observed in every young rider. This is excellent."
Alonso's latest victory, his 10th of the season, equals the achievement Joan Mir reached in 2017 during his victorious Moto3 campaign, positioning him just one win shy of equaling the historic lightweight class record of 11 season wins established by Valentino Rossi in 1997.
