Lewis Hamilton Brushes Off Tense Exchange with Lando Norris Post-Hungarian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has minimized the significance of his tense conversation with Lando Norris in the cooldown room, according to Lewis Larkam in Belgium.
Lewis Hamilton mentioned that his frosty interaction with Lando Norris in the cooldown room following the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix "didn't trouble me."
Following McLaren's first top two finish since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, with Oscar Piastri achieving his initial Formula 1 win in front of his teammate Norris, Hamilton made an effort to praise Norris.
"Wow, you all are quick," Hamilton remarked in the Budapest relaxation area.
"Sure, but seven years back, you were the one with the speedy car," Norris shot back.
Hamilton responded, "Seven years ago? That seems like ages. Did you even work here back then?"
Norris then remarked, "You've experienced it. You had a fast vehicle at your disposal and fully utilized it. Now, it's our turn."
However, the athlete who has clinched the world championship seven times minimized the significance of the uncomfortable interaction during his press conference on Thursday, before the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.
"Hamilton stated, "It didn't upset me, honestly. You see, I'm approaching 40, so I recall my mid-twenties quite well. When I reflect on it, there are things I said back then that I would express differently or respond to differently today."
"I observed that after exiting a race, particularly when there's a belief of deserving a win, emotions tend to run high. From my perspective, this seems to be correlated with age, and I don't perceive it as a personal attack. In the end, it appears that all of us drivers, all competitors, indeed place significant pressure on ourselves. It's part of our approach to our profession."
"I believe that in order to truly excel, one must place a certain level of pressure on oneself. Setting ambitious goals is crucial, and if you fall short yet remain extremely positive and laid-back about the outcome, it's unlikely you'll reach the heights you originally aimed for."
"Is it possible to be overly critical of oneself? Absolutely. I recall a period when, at his age, I confined myself to my room for three consecutive days, so I can empathize. It wasn't beneficial to my well-being, yet I can't say I've spent three days straight gazing at my reflection either.
"I wish he wouldn't. It's crucial that we keep up our current efforts. The drivers are excellent, and they have an outstanding vehicle."
Hamilton was subsequently questioned on whether he believed McLaren's choice to direct Norris to relinquish the lead to Piastri was a smart move.
"He emphasized, 'I don't have the authority to decide that. If Max were in charge, he definitely wouldn't have allowed it to happen. I'm at a loss for words. It's not my decision to make."
"In a scenario like that, I'd follow the team's directives, despite the challenge. After all, it's not just about me. It's about representing and collaborating with the 2,000 individuals involved."
