Lewis Hamilton Anticipates Fortune’s Role in Norris vs. Verstappen F1 Title Showdown
Lewis Hamilton shares his thoughts on Lando Norris competing against Max Verstappen for the F1 championship
Lewis Hamilton gives his opinion on the championship battle in F1 involving Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is of the opinion that for Lando Norris to surpass Max Verstappen in this year’s F1 world championship, a bit of luck will be necessary.
Following his recent win at the Dutch Grand Prix, Norris is currently trailing Verstappen by 70 points, with nine races left in the season.
Hamilton remains the most recent driver to secure a championship with McLaren, achieving this feat in 2008.
During a conversation with reporters, including those from Crash.net at Monza on Thursday, Hamilton shared his thoughts on this year's championship contention, specifically discussing Norris's prospects.
"He emphasized that with so many points up for grabs, the situation isn't beyond reach. Essentially, Max could secure the championship by consistently finishing in second place in the remaining races. Even if his competitor won every race, it wouldn't suffice, suggesting that luck would play a role in the outcome, according to his viewpoint."
McLaren's prospects in the constructors' championship appear significantly brighter, as there's only a 30-point gap between the competing teams.
McLaren last clinched the constructors' championship in 1998.
In 2007, Hamilton and Fernando Alonso managed to secure the highest number of points, but their team was stripped of its constructors' championship due to involvement in the spy-gate controversy.
Hamilton commented, "What's truly thrilling is the possibility of McLaren clinching the constructors championship. I find that incredibly exciting, especially since I was part of the team when we last won the constructors' title."
"Clearly, it was taken from us, yet in terms of how we performed that year, we were the true winners, and I believe there hasn't been a comparable instance since then."
Should Norris keep reducing Verstappen's advantage, it would present Formula 1 with its first real championship battle since 2021.
Hamilton is optimistic that the competition between the two will remain intense until the very end.
"He expressed enthusiasm, noting it could be thrilling not just for the individuals involved, but for the sport as a whole."
"I'm looking forward to a close finish since that would be fantastic for the supporters. Given their recent display, it's certainly a possibility."
