Meta's Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Gain Advanced AI Capabilities
The collaboration between Meta and Ray-Ban has yielded the first genuinely successful AI-powered wearable. Indeed, they have been well-received, combining the iconic Ray-Ban design with advanced technology. This means they avoid the awkward appearance of some previous, more cumbersome mixed-reality devices. The built-in AI can respond to queries and recognize objects through its integrated cameras. Users particularly enjoy the hands-free convenience of taking photos and videos via voice commands, bypassing the need to use their smartphones.
In the near future, Meta will enhance its smart glasses with additional AI-driven voice capabilities. During the Meta Connect event today, the company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed the latest software upgrades for the smart glasses.
"Zuckerberg noted during Connect that often, smart features are not in constant use, leading individuals to prefer wearing something on their face that they find appealing, well-designed, and stylish. He emphasized, "They are exceptional glasses. With ongoing software updates and the expansion of the ecosystem, their intelligence and functionality continue to enhance."
During the Connect event, the corporation introduced the Meta Quest 3S, a cost-effective alternative in its line of mixed-reality headsets. Additionally, it revealed numerous artificial intelligence enhancements throughout its different platforms, incorporating fresh functionalities into its Meta AI and Llama large language models.
Regarding the Ray-Ban smart glasses, Meta is keeping changes to a minimum, opting not to alter what's already working well. Earlier in the year, these glasses were upgraded with artificial intelligence technology, and Meta is now introducing additional features. However, these updates are relatively minor. Users have been able to pose questions to Meta's AI and receive answers through the speakers in the glasses' arms. With the latest updates, there are several new commands and queries that the AI can respond to.
Arguably, the most remarkable feature is the reminder setting function. While donning the glasses, you simply need to gaze at an item and voice out, “Hey, remind me to purchase this book next week,” and the glasses will recognize the book and schedule a reminder accordingly. After a week, Meta AI will prompt you that it’s time to acquire the book.
Meta has announced that its glasses will soon feature live transcription capabilities, allowing users to view real-time translations of speech in various languages. However, the effectiveness of this new feature remains uncertain, as the glasses' past performance with written translations has been inconsistent.
Zuckerberg announced that Meta is collaborating with Be My Eyes, a mobile application from Denmark, to introduce a functionality to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. This feature will enable individuals with blindness or low vision to connect with volunteers. These volunteers can see a real-time video feed and guide the user by describing their surroundings.
"I believe this experience today will not only be quite incredible, but it also offers a peek into what could become more feasible with the constant presence of AI."
New color options for both frames and lenses have been introduced, and there's now the possibility for customers to opt for transition lenses, which adjust their tint based on the sunlight's intensity.
Meta has not provided a specific timeline for the integration of new AI capabilities into its Ray-Ban products, only indicating that they are expected to debut within the current year. Given that there are just three months remaining in 2024, this suggests the update will happen in the near future.
