Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Upgrades Insufficient for Season-Long Victory Challenge
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari’s recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories for the remainder of the season.’
"Is it sufficient to achieve race wins consistently until the season concludes? Not quite, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to reliably compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outperforming McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, illustrating that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season. Monaco's unique characteristics suited our car back then. Similarly, Monza is a track with distinct and unique features."
"There were many straight sections and few corners. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make our car the leading contender for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have a considerable amount of work ahead of us, but I'm nonetheless very pleased to have achieved this here in Italy."
Despite facing challenges since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, pointing to previous championship speculation after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, our performance has been impressive, but the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore might present very different challenges. We need to approach each race with a fresh mindset. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, but as evident, the transition between these two races brought significant changes from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced several of our toughest races of the season as we attempted to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won’t face such challenges in the upcoming races, and I believe that’s unlikely to happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure race wins for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
