Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades ‘Not Enough’ to Secure Season-Long Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories for the remainder of the season’
"Is it sufficient to clinch race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to surpass McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix aimed at solving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, given that Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza is also a unique and distinctive circuit."
“There were many straight sections and few turns on this track. Our performance was boosted by a rear wing specifically designed for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had an upgrade that narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I doubt this will make us the leading car for the rest of the season on different tracks.”
"We have much work ahead, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers’ standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"Our performance this weekend was impressive, but Baku will likely present a new set of challenges, and Singapore will be different yet again. Therefore, we need to readjust our strategies. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, but the transition between those two weekends was quite significant."
"We experienced a stretch of three or four particularly challenging races as we worked to figure out the issues with our car. Looking ahead, I’m optimistic that we won’t face another series of tough races, and I don’t believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't become overly ambitious from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
